Fans will be delighted with this Narcos Season 2 update. With the release of the TV series? teaser trailer, Netflix is not shying away from revealing a major spoiler regarding the inevitable death of the drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.
While official accounts point toward Escobar being gunned down by the Colombian law enforcement agencies while attempting to escape, several accounts given by his close family members suggest that he killed himself to avoid capture. So the significant question remains if the show will adapt ?the death of the famous drug smuggler at the hands of authorities or show the unofficial theory of Escobar killing himself.
The official account of Escobar?s death suggests that the Colombian law enforcement had finally caught up with him on December 2, 1993, the day after his birthday, in a middle-class neighborhood in Medellin. With authorities closing in, a firefight with Escobar and his bodyguard, Alvaro de Jes?s Agudelo (a.k.a. “El Lim?n”), ensued. The two fugitives attempted to escape by running across the roofs of adjoining houses to reach a back street, but both were shot and killed by the Colombian National Police.
Escobar reportedly suffered gunshots to the leg and torso, and a fatal gunshot through the ear, but it has never been proven who actually fired the final shot into his head, or determined whether or not this shot was made during the gunfight or part of a possible execution.
The confusion of the encounter has left the question of who fired the fatal shot open to speculation and several of Escobar?s relatives suggested that he killed himself. His two brothers, Roberto Escobar and Fernando S?nchez Arellano, believe that he shot himself through the ears. ?He committed suicide, he did not get killed. During all the years they went after him, he would say to me every day that if he was really cornered without a way out, he would shoot himself through the ears.?
Another significant theory regarding the death of ?The King of Cocaine? is that it was not the ?Colombian National Police but a vigilante group known as Los Pepes who were actually responsible for gunning down Escobar. Los Pepes is short for Los Perseguidos por Pablo Escobar, which means People Persecuted by Pablo Escobar, a group financed by Escobar?s rivals and former associates including the Cali Cartel.
The Los Pepes is said to have carried out a bloody campaign fueled by vengeance in which more than 300 of Escobar’s associates and relatives were slain and large amounts of his cartel’s property were destroyed. Several independent media reports have suggested that members of Los Pepes actively participated and shared intelligence with the Search Bloc and may have had a hand in killing Escobar. So that?s another angle the Narcos Season 2 could be exploring but whatever is the truth, the Los Pepes will certainly be a part of the new season since they too waged their own war against the drug lord.
With Narcos depending upon two American Drug Enforcement Agents, Steve Murphy and Javier Pe?a, both of whom have been working on the Escobar case for years, it seems the second season of the show will go with the official death account of Escobar. The show has already filmed some of the scenes of Escobar?s death similar to the official photos taken back in 1993.
Narcos Season 2 premieres with all the 10 episodes on September 2, 2016 on Netflix.
