Movember is more than just a catchphrase ? it?s a global movement that?s aimed at raising awareness for men?s health that started with two mates meeting for beer back in 2003. The term, a portmanteau for ?moustache? and ?November?, is now the name of a worldwide foundation supported by 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world. Participating countries include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA.
Movember requires its supporters to avoid shaving above the lip for the entire month of November ? and for what?
Inspired by the moustache’s ability to generate a conversation, Travis Garone, Luke Slattery and their crew established the Movember Foundation in 2004 to tackle some of the?biggest health issues?faced by men ? prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
The funds raised at that time were donated to the?Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, the largest single donation the PCFA had ever received.
By 2014, the foundation was ranked 72nd out of the top 500 NGOs (non-governmental organizations) in the world, funding 832 men?s health projects and raising USD $649 million since 2003.
Basically, you start out the month clean shaven and grow and groom your moustache for 30 days to raise funds.
Want to help? Get a move on and sign up to turn your physical activities ? be it a game of basketball or a 30-minute run ? to fundraising projects to encourage men to exercise regularly for better health. To make it more fun, challenge your friends to match your MOVEs! After 30 days, shaving off that ?stache then means you?re fitter and have helped break the notion of health being an unmanly topic.
