In an interesting turn of events, Betty Cantrell from Georgia was crowned as Miss America?2016. The 21-year old won the title after competing with 51 girls on September 13 in Atlantic?City.
The 21-year-old from Warner Robins, Georgia wrote on Twitter: ‘So HONORED to be your?#MissAmerica 2016! A night I will never forget!’
After winning the title she said, ?This is so incredible. I can’t believe it. I thought I blew the?on-stage question. I didn’t know what he asked me. I am only the second Miss Georgia to win?Miss America, and I am so happy to represent my state,? reported Daily Mail UK.
Cantrell won the talent portion of the pageant after signing ‘Tu, Tu Piccolo Iddio’ from the?opera Madama Butterfly. She has also won a $50,000 scholarship.
According to Hollywood Life, Betty was not keen on participating in pageants but since she?had family friends who were on the Miss Warner Robins board. And this is not the first time?that she has participated in a pageant. She took part for the first time in 2013 and even said?that, ?I realized that no one can change who you are as long as you know who you are.?
Her official bio on MissAmerica.org, her platform is “Healthy Children, Strong America” and?she will now be a National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.?The hospital is a partner of the competition reports ABC News.
The pageant also marked the return of Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams, who was back?for the first time after resigning the crown following a nude photo scandal.?The finale comes after three nights of preliminary competition in the swimsuit, evening gown?and talent categories. Swimsuit winners were Miss South Carolina Daja Dial; Miss Florida?Mary Katherine Fechtel and Wiebers. Talent winners were Wiebers; Miss Louisiana April?Nelson, and Miss Georgia, Betty Cantrell.
