The first scene of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain establishes why Big Boss now has a prosthetic arm and a metal shrapnel peeking out of his head. Users are then transported to a character customization screen after a doctor tells Big Boss that he must change his appearance for him to become unrecognizable by his enemies.
Metal Gear Solid fans will surely be shocked by the implemented feature as completely changing the looks of protagonists in the games has never been done before. Seeing people play Big Boss with different appearances is unexpected especially as the MGS5 TPP trailers never showcased such a feature. The character customization enables users to tweak Big Boss? hair, jaw line, nose width and height, skin color, and numerous others.
Kojima Trolls Players
Once you?re done customizing you character, the doctor shows your reflection on the mirror, reflecting the new look instantaneously. An assassin, Quiet, however immediately chokes the doctor to death which makes him unable to render the operation and this is immediately shown as your reflection on the mirror reflects Big Boss? original appearance, meaning your hours of work in the character customization was?hugely wasted.
According to Forbes, this trolling from Kojima allows gamers to know what to expect from the game. ?It?s the sort of reversal that sets the tone of the game right there in the first five minutes: don?t trust anything, least of all Hideo Kojima.?
With a fully though-out character customization, the feature however doesn?t look like it was purely done to troll players. It is obviously a waste of time and resources to put much effort into this. This feature reportedly would likely be used for Metal Gear Online which will be freely made available for MGS5 TPP owners this October 6 for consoles and January 2016 on PC.
Kojima is well-known for trolling players a lot. Secrets and Easter eggs are also commonplace in the realm of the MGS series and MGSV is no exception as we have already found a couple of Easter eggs in the game. Kojima?s attention to detail and making sure that his game is filled with tons of references and secrets that isn?t searchable in a single play though is the reason why fans look so highly from him.
