McDonald’s Techy Take Of The STRAW

By on

The fast food chain McDonald’s is indeed innovative as they’ve introduced their newly reengineered straw. Obviously, the timing could not get any better because they also recently launched their new dual-layer Chocolate Shamrock Shake. Through this new innovation, drinking shakes will definitely become more enjoyable.

As part of the Shamrock Shake season, McDonald’s decided to fund the reengineering of their straw to make the experience more memorable. The company hired NK Labs and JACE design for the project; both have worked for Google already for Project Ara. The product is now called STRAW or Suction Tube for Reverse Axial Withdrawal.

On February 15, the STRAW was introduced to the public through Facebook Live. In the 20-minute feed, the company promoted their latest invention. The J-shaped straw is designed to optimize your consumption of their drink treats, which of course include the aforementioned Chocolate Shamrock Shake. According to The Verge, the STRAW will perfectly mix both the chocolate and mint portions of the shake.

YouTuber Austin Evans hosted the live feed. McDonald’s team member Darci Forrest, senior director of the company’s innovation team, was present as well during the announcement. Even robotics and aerospace engineers from JACE and NK Labs were there to help with the explanation of the re-engineered straw.

“It was a puzzling assignment but one with an ambitious goal,” said Seth Newburg, principal engineer and managing partner at NK Labs, as reported by Creativity Online. “From a physics perspective, it’s actually quite difficult to deliver a proportional amount of both chocolate and mint flavors with each sip. But that’s exactly what we did. It’s a marvel of fluid dynamics. Thanks Fibonacci sequence.”

STRAW Release Date

As of writing, there is no specific information yet as to when these special straws will hit McDonald’s. However, Creativity Online noted that there will only be 2,000 STRAWs available during this Shamrock season. It will be distributed to select participating restaurants with every purchase of Chocolate Shamrock Shake. For those interested, visit the McDonald’s website to know when and where the STRAWs will arrive.
