Matt Damon stars in The Great Wall which sees the actor fighting monsters 1,000 years ago featuring one of the Wonders of the World.
In the movie, the fantasy element plays a major role with ancient Chinese monsters wreaking havoc across the land. The trailer even reveals a hint of Attack On Titan inspiration.
Visionary director Zhang Yimou talks more about the fantastical and realistic elements of the film with Entertainment Weekly, with monsters attacking people against a literally massive historical backdrop.
He began (via translator), ?The film takes place about 1,000 years ago. At its core, it is a period piece and an action film. The fantasy element does play a major role because of the monsters. But, what makes our film unique is that these are ancient Chinese monsters.?
He continued on about approaching fantasy more realistically, ?Even though it?s a fantasy movie, we filmed it in a very realistic way. We want it to feel like the events actually happened. Other than the monster, all aspects of this film are backed by either scientific or historical research.?
This is perhaps the most massive and expensive Chinese movie of all time. However, you won?t expect to see a historical epic about the Great Wall, as the movie is really a monster movie.
Zhang reiterated that it is in fact a Hollywood monster movie and ?needs to be made in that style.? He added that he didn?t want to change that approach and it wasn?t at all necessary. ?What I really want is to bring Chinese color and cultural background to the worldwide audience through a film language that they are familiar with,? he said.
The trailer teases, ?One of mankind?s greatest wonders? 1,700 years to build? 5,500 miles long? what were they trying to keep out?? Upon seeing the trailer, fans of the Japanese manga/anime, Attack On Titan would instantly see the resemblance in the plot. The manga follows the story of cities surrounded by massive walls because they are keeping out Titans which are gigantic humanoids that eat humans.
Fans of the manga will definitely be thrilled to watch this new monster epic. Damon is joined by Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones), Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Luhan and Jing Tian (who will also be appearing in Kong: Skull Island).
The Great Wall premieres November 23, 2016 and comes out in 3D on February 17, 2017.
