Mass Effect Andromeda just debuted a new gameplay trailer during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The big takeaway from the clip was the reveal of the game?s release date: March 21, 2017. Usually, such news would be a cause for celebration. But in some corners of the internet, there are some fans who seem a little unenthusiastic about what Bioware and EA have shown so far.
Have Mass Effect Andromeda Trailers Been Underwhelming?
Over on the NEOGAF forums, a user named Garlador breaks down what he feels has gone wrong with Mass Effect Andromeda?s marketing efforts so far. His biggest concern was the lack of any spotlight on the game?s supporting cast. Any Bioware fan will know that a hallmark of the studio?s RPGs is the diverse group of characters that accompany the player on his/her adventure. So far, most of the game?s trailers have focused on Ryder ? the new protagonist – and the whole ?new universe? angle.
With the release of Mass Effect Andromeda less than three months away, we still know next to nothing about the rest of the members of the Tempest. Here?s how Garlador compared Andromeda?s promotional approach to that of Mass Effect 2:
?By this point, we were getting countless “meet the crew” trailers, giving us a clear idea of who our teammates would be and what they would be like and why we should take an interest,? he said.
He also took issue with the gameplay snippets that the developers have chosen to reveal so far: ?I still think/hope Andromeda will be good, but the marketing is beyond bizarre at this point. The gameplay slices they’re choosing are just… I don’t want to say ?dull? but, well, yeah. Dull.?
Perhaps Bioware is taking a different approach and doesn?t want to over-promise the way so many AAA games these days do. As the saying goes: Never judge a book by its cover (or in this case, its gameplay trailers).
