Congratulations are in order for Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan; the couple is expecting another baby! The Facebook CEO announced on the social networking site Thursday that they are welcoming a sibling for their daughter Max this year.
“Priscilla and I are happy to share we’re expecting another baby girl!” Zuckerberg wrote. “After our difficult experience having Max, we weren’t sure what to expect or whether we’d be able to have another child. ”
He shared that when he and Priscilla first found out about the pregnancy, their first hope was that it would be healthy. “My next hope was that it would be a girl,” he continued. “I cannot think of a greater gift than having a sister and I’m so happy Max and our new child will have each other.”
Zuckerberg and Chan have been married for nearly five years now. They first met at Harvard in 2003 and dated for nine years before tying the knot in May 2012. They welcomed their first child, Maxima Chan Zuckerberg, in 2015.
Priscilla and I are happy to share we're expecting another baby girl! I grew up with three sisters and they taught me to learn from smart, strong women. They weren't just my sisters but some of my best friends. They've gone on to write books, excel at performance, music, sports, cooking and their careers. They showed me how to compete and still laugh together afterwards. Priscilla grew up with two sisters and they taught her the importance of family, caring for others and hard work. They supported each other as first generation college students and in their careers in medicine and business. They have so many inside jokes — the kind only siblings can understand. We are all better people because of the strong women in our lives — sisters, mothers and friends. We can't wait to welcome our new little one and do our best to raise another strong woman.
Compared to her husband, Chan has been keeping a low profile over the years. Rarely does she make it to the headlines, so most people don’t know anything about her besides being Mark Zuckerberg’s wife. To get more acquainted with her, here are some things about To get more acquainted with her, here are some things about Priscilla Chan
She’s a Pediatrician
A graduate of Harvard, Chan has a degree in BA Biology. She first worked as a Biology teacher for about a year before starting medical school at the University of California, San Francisco in 2008.
According to CNN, she graduated in 2012, around the time she married Zuckerberg on May 19, 2012. She finished her residency in pediatrics in summer of 2015 and has been working at San Francisco General Hospital as a pediatrician ever since.
…and a CEO
The same news outlet reports that she is a co-founder and CEO of The Primary School, a nonprofit private school in East Palo Alto. Its official website states that the institution is dedicated to improving the health and education of children and families in select communities. Specifically, it provides “full-time school” for kids starting at the age of 3; partnership for health services; and continuous model of support for parents.
Her net worth is $14 billion.
The Richest states that her net worth is mostly explained by her marriage to the Facebook CEO who’s worth $58.9 billion. The rest of it likely comes from her medical profession. Chan’s commitment to medicine and health was said to have influenced Zuckerberg in adding an organ donor registry to Facebook.
She suffered 3 miscarriages before.
According to BBC, Zuckerberg revealed that they had suffered three miscarriages prior to Max’s birth. “Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you – as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Zuckerberg added they had decided to share their experience to help other people who are in a similar situation.
Mark Zuckerberg’s wife is due Q4 2017.
Zuckerberg’s latest announcement about Chan’s pregnancy did not reveal her due date. However, Romper notes that most expecting moms wait until they hit the 12-week mark before making announcements. This is primarily because of the higher risk of miscarriage and complications during the first trimester.
Should this be the case for the couple, Max’s sibling could arrive six months from now, in September.
