Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan visited Pope Francis amid the crisis brought by the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Italy. In a statement released by the Vatican Press Office, it said, ?Together they spoke about how to use communications technology to alleviate poverty, encourage a culture of encounter, and to communicate a message of hope, especially to the most disadvantaged.?
Zuckerberg described the moment as unforgettable. He also mentioned how they felt the warmth and welcoming aura of the Pontiff. It radiates his concern for the people and his natural passion to help others. He said ?It was a meeting we’ll never forget. You can feel [the Pope’s] warmth and kindness, and how deeply he cares about helping people.”
WHAT DOES A FACEBOOK CEO GIVE TO A POPE?
Mark Zuckerberg apparently gave the Pontiff a model of Aquila, a solar powered Facebook drone. In Zuckerberg’s Facebook post, it featured him handing the Facebook drone to Pope Francis. It was captioned, ?Priscilla and I had the honor of meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican. We told him how much we admire his message of mercy and tenderness, and how he’s found new ways to communicate with people of every faith around the world.
We also discussed the importance of connecting people, especially in parts of the world without internet access. We gave him a model of Aquila, our solar-powered aircraft that will beam internet connectivity to places that don’t have it. And we shared our work with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to help people around the world.
It was a meeting we’ll never forget. You can feel his warmth and kindness, and how deeply he cares about helping people.?
Rome holds a special place in the couple?s hearts as Zuckerberg and Chan honeymooned in the place. Also, the CEO?s visit in Italy was prompted by the devastating earthquake that rocked the country. Facebook has since become a medium in connecting families separated by disasters such as bombings, hurricanes and earthquakes.
