Netflix?s first original period drama returns this week as Marco Polo Season 2 premieres Friday exclusively on the streaming website.
Season 2 of Marco Polo will be available for binge-watching on July 1, starting 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (12 a.m. PDT) and fans anxiously waiting for answers to what happened after the Mongolian army conquered the city of Xiangyang can finally get some insight.
According to iDigital Times, the latest trailer shows Kublai Khan promoting Marco Polo to the Order of the Mongol Knights while Kaidu challenges Kublai?s rule as the King of the Mongol Empire. The great Khan is now in a tough position after executing his brother, Ariq, last season. The fact that Kublai killed his own brother as well as his favoritism toward Marco may sway the people of the Yuan Dynasty in favor of Kaidu?s rule.
Meanwhile, Hundred Eyes warns Marco Polo there is a war brewing both outside and inside the empire?s borders. Kaidu claims, ?I am the future Khan of Mongolia,? and Tom Wu and Michelle Yeoh run around kicking ass between shots of cities burning and fire-engulfed horses galloping across the battlefield.
Marco Polo Season 1 began with Marco Polo, a Venetian boy, being abandoned by his father in the hands of the King of the Mongol Empire in exchange for passage on the Silk Road. He adapts to Mongolian culture and studies martial arts with Hundred Eyes, a blind monk and wise master of Kung Fu. Kublai Khan sees Marco Polo as an asset for his worldly views and seeks his help in conquering the world. In the Season 1 finale, Kublai?s Mongolian Army overpowers Jia Sadao?s troops and defeats the Chinese City of Xiangyang.
After asking to lead the battle in the Season 1 finale, Kublai banished Kaidu from Cambulac. As the ruler of the Chagatai Khanate (a division of the Mongol Empire), history reveals Kaidu waged war with Kublai for over 30 years and wasn?t successful. In Season 2, fans can see Kaidu?s struggles against Kublai.
Executive producer John Fusco has promised lot more action with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon actress Michelle Yeoh joining the drama in Season 2 as a mysterious woman from Hundred Eyes? (Tom Wu) past.
?When it comes to martial arts action cinema, you have Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh,? Fusco said in a Netflix featurette. ?And I promise, it?s going to be a lot of action in Season 2.?
Here?s the official synopsis: ?In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, Marco Polo is based on the famed explorer?s adventures in Kublai Khan?s court in 13th Century China, and the dark and tempestuous battle for the expanding Mongol empire.?
