Five Centimeters Per Second and The Garden of Words director, Makoto Shinkai, is currently locked in a battle with haters of Kimi No Na Wa (or Your Name) after receiving negative criticism for his new film. Despite being a hit in Japan and abroad, some have still panned the animated movie created by the man who many have penned as the ?next Hayao Miyazaki.?
In fact, Your Name was such a hit that it is currently the second best animated movie, closely coming behind the Studio Ghibli masterpiece, Spirited Away.
This is why it comes as a big surprise as there are still some who have panned the movie for supposedly throwing ?away his (Shinkai?s) artistic style.?
Other fans were just as unforgiving.
?Shinkai sold his soul for financial success,? accused one critic. Another one claimed that Shinkai ?mixed together various common motifs, so of course the movie is gonna be popular.?
Even fellow artists voiced their displeasure for the movie. One of whom was Golden Boy illustrator, Tatsuya Egawa.
?Looking at the movie as a professional, it?s not interesting at all,? shared the artist.
Shinkai did not take the comments sitting down, though, responding immediately to his critics.
Makoto Shinkai?s Response
?Well, maybe they?re exactly right (about Your Name not being very good),? stated the director. But at the same time, if it?s that easy for them to make a successful anime, by all means, they should go right ahead and make one too. I didn?t aim for the big box office numbers; these are just the results of the movie being what it is. After all, it?s hard to sell something that?s specifically created to be sold.?
?For two years, we struggled and struggled and struggled,? added Shinkai during his interview. ?So when I hear people saying it?s a movie that combines catchy, trendy things, I get pretty angry.?
Behind these strong words, though, the Your Name director is still reluctant to hear what the great Miyazaki will have to say about his film.
?Honestly, I really don?t want Miyazaki to see it because he will see all its flaws,? admitted Shinkai. ?For me it?s incomplete, unbalanced. The plot is fine but the film is not at all perfect. Two years was not enough.?
But who is he to judge, right? Everyone knows that you are your own worst critic. Let us be the judge.
Do you think Makoto Shinkai is the next Hayao Miyazaki?
