Game director Neil Druckmann has been keeping fans at bay with The Last of Us 2 teasers. However, he nor Naughty Dog has never entirely clarified if the game was some sort of priority for the studio or not. They haven’t provided a release date either, leaving us fans in the dark as to when we’ll get our hands on the game. Initial reports claimed it would hit the shelves this Christmas the earliest, but a new one states it might not see the light of day until 2019.
We got our first look at the game when Sony dropped the first The Last of Us 2 trailer December last year. The video did not disclose anything about its release date, not even the year. With that, it was safe to guess that production was still so early that the game makers themselves do not know when the sequel will be rolled out.
Unfortunately, four months later, there’s been little to no progress to its development. Reports have it that the second installment is still in pre-production and that the majority of the team is still working on Uncharted: The Lost Legacy which is slated to debut this August. As they have yet to do significant work on the title, Naughty Dog still has no ability to gauge when they’ll reach the end. Contrary to the 2017 claims, a 2019 The Last of Us 2 release date now seems more likely.
Of course, that’s nothing but a mere estimate until the studio gives a proper release announcement. At this point, there’s still more that remains unconfirmed. To keep you updated, here’s a rundown of what we know, and what we think we know, about The Last of Us 2 release.

What The Last Of Us 2 Will Be About

The second title continues the story of Joel and Ellie, although players will reportedly spend the majority of the time controlling the latter. It picks up some years later, as Ellie has already grown into a young woman in the trailer. Plot details are scarce, but Druckmann previously confirmed that hate will play a major role in the new game and the trailer reflected this remark.

We can recall that the trailer closed with Ellie promising to hunt down and kill a whole bunch of people. It’s pretty obvious that a great deal happened off screen since the first installment ended. We’re yet to determine what made Ellie so angry, but fans theorize it may have something to do with Joel.

Is Joel Dead?

A popular theory claims he may have died and the male character we saw Ellie conversed with in the video when she made that killing spree promise could be just a figment of her imagination. Many are convinced as Joel looked clean and young while Ellie looked messy and older.

There’s not a lot to go on to confirm at this point, but the theory is not an entirely crazy idea. Based on the events at the end of the original game, there are certainly people who are not happy with Joel like the revolutionary militia group Fireflies. In the first game, we saw Joel shot their leader Marlene to death after attempting to take Ellie away for surgery. So, it is possible that he has been murdered by the same group and Ellie wants to avenge his death.

The Last of Us 2 Release Date: What To Expect

Regardless, the game makers promised the game won’t definitely disappoint. Naughty Dog CEO Evan Wells assured the new title will be more interesting, exciting and thrilling than the first. In an interview, he goes to say that it “will be a great game. We actually just got the story pitch from Neil [Druckmann] very recently, and- it’s going to be amazing.”

Apart from the two aforementioned protagonists, The Last of Us 2 will introduce another character. Shannon Woodward, who plays Elsie in Westworld, recently boarded the game, though there is nothing to go on yet regarding the character she’s playing and her connections to the first game. Gameplay-wise, the Druckmann’s latest Twitter post teases horseback fighting sequences.

The Last Of Us 2 will be launched solely and exclusively for PlayStation 4. As of now, there is still no confirmation if it will grace other platforms in the near future.
