BBC has not yet confirmed the news but speculations are rife recently that Kris Marshall would succeed Peter Capaldi in the role of Doctor Who. But who exactly is he and what do we know about him? What other roles has the actor had before? Here’s all you need to know about the rumored new time lord.

Who is Kris Marshall?

Born in Somerset, Kris Marshall is a 44-year-old actor who has appeared in a number of shows since the early 90s. He is currently married to Hannah Dodkins, whom he shares two beautiful children and live with in Bath.

Marshall made an early career appearance on the police procedural show The Bill. However, it was not until 2000 that he had his major breakthrough role as Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom, My Family. He most notably appeared in the movie Love Actually as Colin Frissell and in in the 2012 BBC comedy series Citizen Khan as Dave.

According to The Sun, he is an alumnus of the Redroofs Theatre School and is rather tall at 6’2. While the former My Family and Death in Paradise actor has fine acting credentials, his casting as the 13th doctor is raising eyebrows among Whovians.

Will he be the new Doctor Who?

For those who missed it, the Doctor Who casting news originated when Marshall announced his departure from Death in Paradise during the same week as Capaldi declared he’s exiting the popular BBC series. More recently, several reports claimed that the network has indeed chosen him for the role and that he had already begun filming for the show.

“Kris Marshall has already joined the cast and will regenerate at the end of this series, not in the Christmas special,” an insider claimed.

Previous rumors pointed out that Doctor Who might finally feature the first female Doctor in the show after Capaldi. But according to the paper, the network has declined to consider a woman for the lead character, with the source adding: “They won’t risk a woman Doctor. They want a David Tennant type.”

BBC has reportedly debunked the allegations, insisting no casting decisions have been set in stone just yet.

Why should Kris Marshall NOT be the 13th Doctor?

Apart from the fact that his casting is still unconfirmed, Marshall as the new time lord is still dubious especially because he left Death in Paradise to spend more time with his wife and children. Why would he take on one of the most intense roles in television then? But again, his acting resume makes him a plausible choice for the role.

During his portrayal of DI Humphrey Goodman in the British-French crime comedy-drama, Marshall showed many Doctor-ish qualities like an endearing quirkiness and a clumsy charm. From that alone, you may already see how well he would give life to the fictional Doctor in the BBC hit. To give you a perspective, Metro describes him falling between Matt Smith and David Tennant.

He’s basically a safe option. There’s no denying that he’s competent but as the site says, he’s simply “the sort of choice that makes you go ‘yeah, alright, I guess’” which is the problem.

Just like Capaldi, the Doctor for Series 11 “should make you sit bolt upright–surprise you, catch you off guard, but still make you go ‘ooh, that’s an inspired choice’.” However, such is oftentimes not the result when the show opts for a safe option. Instead of making the character exciting and compelling, it becomes dull and uninteresting instead.

So, who should be Capaldi’s successor?

At this point, some fans continue to petition the female Doctor, arguing there’s no need to limit the roles they’ve traditionally occupied in the Doctor Who universe. Among the favorites to inherit the keys to the TARDIS are Lara Pulver, Suranne Jones, Tilda Swinton, Helena Bonham Carter and Maisie Williams.

For the opposite gender, leading the race are Ben Whishaw, Idris Elba, and Rory Kinnear. Rupert Grint and Tom Hiddleston are also being linked to the role, although their hectic schedules make them two of the most unlikely choices.
