Square Enix’s upcoming Kingdom Hearts entry remains to be one of the most anticipated titles despite not having a solid release date yet. Players are looking forward to what adventures Sora, Goofy, Donald and other Disney characters will get into. Aside from Disney characters, Kingdom Hearts 3 is also likely to bring in Final Fantasy characters, but there’s a good reason why a world based on the RPG series shouldn’t come to the game.
Igniting Interest In Final Fantasy-based Worlds
Recently, Famitsu (via Dualshockers) held a poll asking fans on who from the Final Fantasy series they’d like to see in a future Kingdom Hearts game. The poll didn’t specifically point to Kingdom Hearts 3, so the poll could be referring to future Kingdom Hearts games as well. The results of the poll are as follows:
- Noctis (Final Fantasy 15) – 237 votes
- Lightning (Final Fantasy 13) – 201 votes
- Zidane (Final Fantasy 9) – 81 votes
- Chocobos – 30 votes
- Bartz (Final Fantasy 5) – 22 votes
It’s no surprise that Noctis takes the lead on this one considering the poll was recently conducted and that Final Fantasy 15 is the latest entry in the series. What caught many off guard is Lightning’s inclusion in the top 5 even though Final Fantasy 13 wasn’t a very popular entry in the series.
The poll just asked which characters fans would want to see in a Kingdom Hearts game, not necessarily whether or not fans want to see the respective character’s Final Fantasy world in the game. Honestly speaking though, Square Enix shouldn’t add a Final Fantasy world in Kingdom Hearts 3 or in any Kingdom Hearts game at all.
Any world from the Final Fantasy series probably won’t fit in with the light vibe of the Kingdom Hearts series. Despite the wackiness, the Disney worlds are just a perfect match for the game’s overall theme. Adding in worlds like Gaia from Final Fantasy 7 isn’t fitting as the world is dark and brooding. On the other hands, Eos from Final Fantasy 15 is too serious for the likes of Sora.
Too Much Content
Aside from the darker tone in Final Fantasy games, each entry in the series is bustling with content. It’s easy to condense the story of two-hour movies like Big Hero 6 and Pirates of the Carribbean to fit it in a Kingdom Hearts world. On the other hand, it would be difficult to translate 50-100 hours worth of experience that each Final Fantasy entry offers.
Aside from intricate plot points, the long and arduous journey of the band of characters in each Final Fantasy game is what makes each entry fulfilling to play. Shortening the experience for a Kingdom Hearts world might not give justice to the game.
Final Fantasy Worlds Ruled Out
Earlier in 2016, Kingdom Hearts 3 co-director Tai Yasue told GameSpot they have no plans to add Final Fantasy worlds in the latest game. However, they did not rule out Final Fantasy worlds in future games.
“We’re not adding any Final Fantasy worlds. A lot of the original [to Kingdom Hearts] worlds [Hollow Bastion, Traverse Town, e.t.c.] had Final Fantasy characters in them. At this moment, we are not really coming up with any plans for that, we’re making original worlds and Disney worlds.”
Final Fantasy Content Is Here To Say
Square Enix hasn’t introduced Final Fantasy-based worlds yet in the series. It did, however, add in many characters from the series including Cloud, Auron, Squall, Wakka, Yuna and many more. The series even put Moogles at the center by making them as save points. Lucky for us, Square Enix has said before that it does not plan on introducing Final Fantasy worlds in the game.
When it comes to the characters, having been able to team up with Auron and other Final Fantasy characters was fun. We’re sure that even Noctis would spice up the game but that’s about it. It’s better to be exploring Disney worlds in the game only since it’s what series fans have been used to for a long time now.
Square Enix is yet to fully reveal what worlds are included in Kingdom Hearts 3, but there are already a few ones that are confirmed. For now, players can expect to set foot in the worlds of Hercules, Big Hero 6 and a few others more. Players can also expect to set foot in recurring worlds such as Atlantis from Little Mermaid and Hallow Bastion, which is an original world for the series.
Many are also wishing for Square Enix to add in Marvel or Star Wars worlds in lieu of Disney’s acquisition of Marvel and LucasArts. However, we’ve yet to hear if the two franchises would be part of the game.
