Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West disclosed on social media that their newborn son?s name is Saint West. The couple welcomed their baby boy early Saturday, in Los Angeles. The baby is their second child.
In a post titled ‘To Our Fans’ on her subscription based website kimkardashianwest.com, the reality star wrote simply: ‘Saint West, 12.05.15, 8 pounds 1 ounce.’
Kim, 35, and Kayne, 38, are already parents to a two-year-old daughter named North.
When North was born in June 2013, her grandma Kris Jenner explained her moniker during an appearance on The View. “The way [Kim] explained it to me was North means ‘highest power,’ and she says that North is [Kim and Kanye’s] highest point together,” Jenner explained. “And I thought that was really sweet,” quoted usmagazine.com
Looking at the couple?s first child?s name North West, the choice of the name is not surprising; it?s still a bold move: According to Social Security Administration data, the name Saint has not cracked the 1,000 most popular American names for a baby boy for any year in the last century. In total, 32 babies were named Saint in 2014 and 22 in 2013, according to time.com
The site further reported that a name beginning with ?Saint? means something very particular: that the person in question has been canonized. A professor of theology at University of Notre Dame and the author of A Brief History of Saints, Lawrence Cunningham is of the opinion that as a proper name, the name Saint is peculiar but meaningful. And these days, it is not easy to find modern babies named Saint. Moreover, it?s even harder to pin down the history of religious sainthood.
?The word saint simply means one who is set aside or one who is chosen by God,? Cunningham says. ?Even before Christianity became a tolerated religion in the Roman Empire in the early 4th century, certain people were designated as saints in a more particular sense as people who were outstanding models of the Christian faith.?
Lawrence Cunningham is of the view that over the course of history in the church, the procedure of people who are named saints has changed. And here canonization comes in. ?It sounds horribly bureaucratic but it means the procedure by which someone is listed on the list, or canon, of people venerated publicly in the church,? he says.
On the other hand, no sooner than ?The Keeping Up With the Kardashians? star announced her new born baby?s name, memes poking fun at the name began circulating on Twitter and Instagram, reported dailymail.co.uk
With photos of Kim and Kanye’s faces pasted onto the faces of Mary and Joseph, a painting of Mary and Joseph kneeling over the baby Jesus’ manger was also shown.
Following suit, another meme placed the baby emoji – the same one used by Kim in her name announcement post – onto a painting of a saint, while one showed Kanye as Jesus, cradling the baby emoji, the site further added.
A Twitter user jokingly recommended that while picking out the names of her two children, Kim was smoking marijuana. There was another user who wrote ‘New York’s hottest club is Saint West,? posting a photo of the gay nightclub promoter Stefon played by Bill Hader on Saturday Night Live. One more Twitter user used the lyrics from Kanye’s song Golddigger with a slight tweak at the end, writing; ’18 years, 18 years. Your name is going to be Saint West for at least 18 years.’
Reggie Bush, Kim’s ex was also featured in a tweet that showed him giving some side eye while on the football field with the words ‘That moment when you look up and see that your ex named her new kid Saint.’
The dailymail.co.uk stated that last week, Kim disclosed on her website that she was finding it difficult settling on a suitable moniker for her baby boy. Kim?s answer to her current ‘dislikes’ in a Q&A was: ‘All baby names I am hearing. We need to think of a good name. This is so hard!’
The site added, The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star said calling the baby South (to go with North) would be the ‘stupidest thing ever’ as it was widely expected that Kim and Kanye would pick out another unusual name for their second-born child.
?She told NPR in June: ‘I don?t like South West, though, because North will always be better and she has a better direction. So I wouldn?t do that. I don?t think we?ll go with another direction.
She added: ‘Everyone keeps on saying South, and I think it?s so stupid. It?s the stupidest thing ever.’
During an interview in September, Kim also revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that she was a fan of the name Easton, but added: ‘I don’t think my husband likes that name, but I do like it.’
