A week after J. Cole kicked off his 4 Your Eyez Only tour, there’s already a word out that he’s back in the studio with a hip-hop giant, but it’s not Kendrick Lamar.
Rumors that the Cole and K-Dot are working on a collaborative record has swirled in the last couple of years. There have been some clues here and there that the Kendrick Lamar J Cole album collab is happening. But the lack of direct updates from the rappers themselves has many skeptical that it’s happening soon and the recent update just fueled that suspicion.
Cole, according to Hot New Hiphop, has been keeping some very elite company in the studio lately. In a star-studded picture posted to Instagram by Dem Jointz, a producer who has worked with Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna in the past, the Wet Dreamz rapper posed side by side with the likes of Dr. Dre, Mell Beatz, J.Lbs, King Mez and Jointz himself.
There’s no official word on what they recorded or for whose upcoming project it was. But the cryptic caption led fans to speculate that it’s a collaborative track or project from Cole and Dre.
Between new music and touring, both artists have been heavy on the music scene as of late. Dre just recently debuted his and Jimmy Iovine‘s Defiant Ones documentary, a series detailing their move from Interscope Records to Apple Music. He has also produced a song for Eminem in preparation for the Lose Yourself hitmaker’s ninth album.
There are speculations that Lamar could be featured on Shady’s new collection after they were spotted hanging out. But that, too, hasn’t been confirmed yet.
K-Dot is currently busy with his The Damn tour. It spans 17 dates, kicking off Wednesday, July 12 in Phoenix, Arizona and concluding August 6 with a hometown gig at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. The tour has an accompanying pop-up shop, which will likely feature some of the Lamar-related apparel Top Dawg Entertainment has unveiled in recent weeks.
