Katy Perry, as we have all noticed by now, has been on the short end of the stick when it comes to her ongoing public feud with former friend Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift?s moves have all been on-point, planned and executed well, happening at the right place and at the right time, as she has been orchestrating herself an elaborate but well thought-of chess play. Just take a look at how the Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston love affair played out, which a lot of fans took as a diversionary tactic to take the attention away from Kim Kardashian?s plans to expose the truth behind Taylor?s approval of Kanye West?s ?Famous? song.
In case the Katy Perry -Taylor Swift feud is already out of your mind, here?s a quick recap: the two became bosom buddies in 2009. Katy and Tay Tay would send each other cute messages on Twitter and gush about their parties, songs, tours, etc. But the cracks in the foundation started to show in 2012, when two things happened: Katy began dating Taylor?s ex-boyfriend John Mayer, and three of Katy?s tour dancers moved to Taylor?s tour. It didn?t help the growing tension between Katy and Taylor when those three dancers decided to re-join Katy?s world tour. Slighted by their transfer, Taylor reportedly unfollowed those three dancers on Twitter.
Taylor became vocal about her ongoing feud when she released ?Bad Blood,? a song from her album, 1989. In her 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Taylor Swift talked about her spat with an unnamed female artist.
?For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ?Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life???
In the same interview, Taylor was also quoted as saying, ?She did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies’. And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business.
?She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational – you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.
?I know people will make it this big girl-fight thing. But I just want people to know it’s not about a guy.?
A day after Taylor Swift?s Rolling Stone interview came out, Katy Perry took to Twitter and posted some cryptic message: ?Watch out for the Regina George in sheep?s clothing…?
For the most part of their feud, Katy Perry is the one that has kept her silence. The only times fans would hear her drop hints or throw some shade is when she would post loaded statements on Twitter.
Adding fuel to the fire was the tweet of Taylor?s ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris, who more or less confirmed that Taylor did fire at Katy: ?I know you?re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC, but I?m not that guy, sorry. I won?t allow it.?
As expected, Katy took it as a go-signal for her to say something. And she did via a GIF of Hillary Clinton, on Twitter.
The ?right time? might have arrived a couple of days ago, when Katy released the video of her latest song, ?Rise,? which, from the looks of it, could be an anthem for the upcoming Rio Olympics.
According to Christine Linnel of What?s Trending:
?And now ALL OF A SUDDEN we have this new anthem that?s all about rising above pettiness and conflict to unite humanity and achieve victory despite the people who want to tear her down.
?Just check out the lyrics: When, when the fire?s at my feet again / And the vultures all start circling / They?re whispering, ?You?re out of time? / But still I rise.
?Are these ?vultures? really referring to the inner doubts of Simone Biles as she strives for Olympic gold, or are they the critics who dismissed Katy and declared Taylor the queen of pop music??
The Hillary Clinton GIF is there for a reason, too. According to Vocativ deputy editor Erin Gloria Ryan, Katy Perry aligning herself with Hillary ?was a masterful act of anti-Taylor Swift gamesmanship.?
Erin offered an explanation:??Because with Katy in the Hillary camp, Taylor couldn?t exactly squad up without looking sub-Perry in the hierarchy. In this way, Katy made a massively ballsy chess game-type move designed to eventually ?mate Taylor. If Hillary wins, it?s Katy, not Taylor, at the inaugural ball. This pop star feud is the best of all time.??
Christine Linnel sums it up: ?If everything plays out the way I?m convinced Katy wants it to, she?s going to be the pop star figurehead of two of the hugest media events of the year, the Olympics and the presidential election, while Taylor is busy organizing lovey-dovey photoshoots with Tom Hiddleston or whatever the hell she?s doing.?
With Kim and the rest of the Kardashian sisters hot on Taylor?s heels, and Katy Perry?s plans now in place, we may witness the biggest takedown in celebrity feud history sooner or later. But then again, one should never underestimate a woman like Taylor Swift. She?s not on top of the food chain for nothing.
