Minecraft is supported in different platforms such as the Windows PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4. Mojang and 4J studios are the two game studios responsible for fixing, porting, and updating the said game. However, despite Minecraft?s massive popularity in those consoles, there is still a distinct niche waiting to be filled ? the Minecraft for Wii U and 3DS.
Nintendo?s Heads for Internal Development, Shinya Takahashi and Shigeru Miyamoto, had spoken to gaming site Kotaku about the topic. They expressed that Mojang?s famous world-building game would be ?a good fit? on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. They said that the touch control capabilities of the 3DS and Wii U GamePad, Minecraft would be able to reach a wider audience.
In the interview, Takahashi mentioned, “We’ve always thought internally that using the GamePad would probably make for a Minecraft that’s very easy to play. And, of course, if we were to do something with Minecraft on the 3DS, similarly we would probably do it where it would be easier to play and could probably reach a lot of kids.”
The Nintendo execs said that their main focus for a possible Minecraft for Wii U or 3DS port is to make it appeal to more gamers in untapped markets, particularly in Japan. Takahashi further went on to say, ?What?s interesting is that, in Japan, Minecraft is not popular in the way it is in the U.S. and Europe, so we?ve also thought that, if we were able to do a partnership like that, it might bring opportunity to help make Minecraft more popular in Japan.?
Minecraft creator Markus Persson (a.k.a. Notch) addressed the likely arrival of Minecraft for Wii U and 3DS late last year. In a December 2013 tweet, he said ?I am not aware of any plans to release a Wii U version of Minecraft.? Notch also mentioned in the earlier part of 2013 that Microsoft had previously struck a deal with Minecraft developers to allow the game to be played exclusively in their Xbox 360 and Xbox One models. But once that deal was up, Minecraft has also been slated to arrive on Sony?s PS3 and PS4. Apparently, Notch doesn?t want to be misconstrued, he said in another tweet, ?I agree a Wii U version would make sense, by the way. The only reason for no current plans is we?ve got too much work already. I <3 Nintendo.?
Minecraft had been fully released in 2011, since then it has appeared on various platforms mentioned above, as well as in mobile consoles (i.e. PlayStation Vita) and mobile OS such as iOS and Android. With the possible arrival of Minecraft for Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo is sure to boost their gaming advantage further.
