With 2017 fast approaching, a flurry of rumors for Apple?s next-gen smartphone, allegedly called the iPhone 8, are bouncing from publication to publication. The latest on Apple?s iPhone 8 specs and features is?new touch-sensitive technology. Also, the latest reports indicate of three variants for the upcoming iPhone 8.
Previous iPhone models have so far used LCD display panels. But this is set to change in the new iPhone 8. The?OLED display has been long rumored to be included in the next-gen iPhone. Latest report reaffirmed a curved OLED display for the iPhone 8 similar to the Galaxy Edge series.
A report from the Korea Herald indicated that display in iPhone8 will be a plastic OLED panel that curves ?all over.? The publication said?Apple?s OLED panel orders from Samsung Display have been solely for plastic units, not the glass ones. The report notes that companies typically use glass for flat panels, while plastic allows for curved screens.
The Herald source further revealed that Samsung’s curved OLED capacity is estimated between 70 to 100 million units. This is less than half of Apple’s annual iPhone sales. Rumors say this will?probably means?a curved OLED display will be?limited to a ?premium? model. Other iPhone models coming out will depend on flat LCDs from LG Display and JDI.
iPhone 8 Touch Sensitive Technology
Also, the Korea Herald report stated that Apple may or may not use new technology that ?enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device.? The touch sensitive technology will cover the rear and side panels of the iPhone 8.
The report appears to support speculations that Apple will ditch the Home Screen button and most of the physical keys in favor of invisible controllers. The iPhone is expected to feature a Touch ID Home Button somehow integrated into the display itself, eliminating the bottom bezel. It appears unclear at this point whether or not Apple will include the so called optical fingerprint sensors.
This rumor also lends credibility to the iPhone 8 undergoing a radical design departure. It will change from existing aluminum to a glass covered model.
With glass panels, the iPhone 8 is also expected to support wireless charging. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities said 2017?iPhone will add wireless charging. iPhone 8 owners will be able to charge their batteries using an inductive pad. However, the charger will be an additional purchase accessory, rather than being included in the box.
