Instagram is one of the more popular social media applications that is now in use over the Internet. It is estimated that instagram has 300 million monthly active users with about 75 million of those active daily on the site. As of July 2014, there were 18,700,000,000 photos uploaded to the social media application or about 58,000,000 per day. The sheer volume of images stored and users viewing them makes this application one of the most widely used by people not just in the US, but the world over.
The Storm under the Surface
One of the more sensitive issues on the site is the nudity policy.? In its original form, the social media app?s policy banned sexual intercourse, genitalia and close ups of fully nude buttocks, according to a report from BBC.co.uk. The most controversial part is the rule on ?female nipples?, which lead to some photos being removed by the management. For this, Instagram has been criticized many times over.
New Guidance for on-site nudity
Now the media app has given clarity to these rules. In a report from thewrap.com, Instagram declared,? ?Photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breast feeding are allowed.?
It added, ?We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don?t allow nudity on Instagram. This includes photos, videos and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also include some photos of female nipples, but photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too.?
The social media app also gave caution to those who post their photos of their children in bathtubs, citing ?safety reasons?. It said, ?Even when this content is shared with good intentions, it could be used by others in unanticipated ways.?
The Debate on Freedom continues
The new rules though still pose some issues to users, as indicated in a report from dazeddigital.com. One such issue is the criteria for the removal of these photos featuring female nipples. One of its major celebrities, Rihanna, has her pictures removed because of this rule. Another celebrity, Scout Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, was even banned from the site for posting her own nipple pictures, even starting #freethenipple campaign on the site.
To these, Instagram said, ?Women are regularly kicked off Instagram for posting photos with any portion of the areola exposed, while photos sans nipple ? degrading as they might be ? remain unchallenged.?
