It looks like the mystery of Joker’s return in Injustice 2 has been revealed and it’s one that makes sense. Those that played the first game know that Joker was murdered by Superman after he killed Lois and destroyed Metropolis. Since then, many have been wondering how he would return in the second game, especially now that he’s been confirmed.
Thanks to DR3 Gaming, the mystery of Joker’s comeback might have been spoiled by some of the game’s intro dialogue. At the 54 second mark, Batman says “You’re the other Earth’s Joker,” referring to the events of the first Injustice game. Joker essentially confirms this, saying “This Earth’s better, I have disciples here,” so it looks like this case is closed.
Crisis On Multiple Earths
While some fans might find the reveal cheap, Injustice 2 has been using multiple earths since it was revealed. Black Canary is returning to this Earth after almost being killed, bringing an alternate Green Arrow with her. Superman was only imprisoned after a good version of the character stopped him, though he has seemingly escaped.
Here is hoping the game doesn’t overuse this storytelling device, since it can get old and repetitive really quickly. That being said, this is the only sensible way Joker could be brought back to the game’s roster. Storyline-wise, no one would want to resurrect him, including former partner Harley Quinn, who realized he was an evil man.
The Joke’s Over
Now that the Joker’s mystery has been revealed, it will be interesting to see him come back in Story mode. There’s no way the Justice League would bring him in this realm, so maybe he steals something that brings him here. Whether this will lead to a return from the good Justice League is still unknown, though players will find out soon.
One thing the intro doesn’t explain is why he suddenly bears resemblance to Jared Leto’s version of the character. Thankfully, they don’t add any pretentious tattoos to his body, but his clothing is clearly inspired by Suicide Squad. Fans won’t be bothered by this however, since he might have one of the most fun move-sets in the game.
Injustice 2 is slated for a May 16 release on the PS4 and Xbox One, with Darkseid as a pre-order bonus. The mobile version of the game comes out on May 11 with Catwoman as a pre-register bonus. A physical copy of the tie-in comic comes out this week, collecting the first few digital chapters.
