Amidst rumors surrounding the HTC Flounder and Android Silver, yet another leak surfaced this weekend. This time, it?s about HTC Volantis. Whether this is the same device as the HTC Flounder (the next Nexus tablet?) or just another tablet model, we don?t know yet. But leaked photos and specs highly suggest that it?s the former.
Android Police reported that the HTC Volantis may indeed be Google?s new addition to their line of Nexus tablets. This apparently specs-rich, 8.9-inch tablet maybe HTC?s comeback to the Nexus turf since their release of the Nexus One in 2010. Previous Google-powered tablets such as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 were made by Samsung.
According to information provided by Android Police?s sources, here are the specs to come with the rumored HTC Volantis along with the leaked photo (see below) as it appears on their post.
- 8.9″ Display at 2048×1440 (281ppi)
- NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor (Tegra K1)
- 2GB RAM
- 16/32GB internal storage
- 8MP OIS main camera, 3MP front facing camera
- Aluminum zero-gap construction
- Stereo front-facing speakers
- 8.91″x5.98″x0.31″ body (that’s 22.63×15.19×0.79cm)
- 418g (or 427g with LTE) (that’s 14.74/15.1 ounces)
Judging by the specs alone, the HTC Volantis may be considered as a flagship device. But the leaked report suggests that the device?s price tag is not that bank-breaking expensive. With the rumored costs of $ 499 for the 32 GB variant and $ 399 for the 16 GB model, the tablet may not be that dirt-cheap but consumers may well be getting their money?s worth if the leaked specs are accurate.
In the photo, the absence of HTC?s famous front-facing speakers is noticeable. It also appears that the tablet?s casing, reminiscent of the Nexus 7?s soft touch rear, is not exactly made with aluminum zero-gap construction. The 8.9-inch screen will result to a 2048×1440 resolution display and a pixel density of 281 ppi. Compared to the iPad Air, that?s not as crisp but close enough. Furthermore, the model is expected to come with a K1 Tegra processor by Nvidia. That processor is considered to be many times more powerful than the latest processor from Snapdragon.
The HTC Volantis is said to be the first device to be powered by Google?s rumored OS called Android L, with a release date pegged at the last quarter of this year. With various rumors involving the scrapping of Nexus 6 in favor of Android Silver, it?s a prudent move not to speculate too much when it comes to upcoming Nexus models. As such, devices coming from Google?s Android Silver Program are not expected to be launched until next year so it actually makes sense if Google will be prepping to release an Android L Nexus tablet later this year.
