Several news reported this weekend that Niantic, developer of Pokemon GO, will officially launch a new game called Harry Potter GO. Thousand of fans got fooled and even a known British Newspaper got sacked for publishing it. Sorry Harry Potter fans, looks like the news is really a hoax. Here?s why:
Creators.co, who reported this news last saturday, July 30, posted an update disclaimer on their Harry Potter GO article: Sorry guys, seems like the sources are not as official as some sites claimed they are. So there is no official announcement yet, but let’s keep our hopes up! I’ll leave the original article here as a reference. I apologize if this got you overexcited.
The idea to petition this game to be developed was originated by Ashtyn Hannon. She mentioned on her petition page that this game, aside from it being super awesome, would also be a good promotional tool for J.K. Rowling?s new movie series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Hannon suggested that the game app should allow players to cast spells in real life, hunt for magical creatures, and search for the 7 Horcruxes and destroy them.
HelloGiggles then reported that Warner Bros. Niantic saw the petition and took the bait claiming that senior developer, Marcus Figueroa stated: ?the demand for this title was absolutely insane, so we figured we?d give it a shot.?
HelloGiggles probably got their info from a site called JTHX news which quoted Figueroa?s statement as his interview with IGN.
However, when you click the link to IGN, it leads to an error page. Plus when you search IGN?s website, no news on this comes out. JTHX news website also looks suspicious – their homepage is currently blank.
To all Harry Potter fans, for now you can continue playing Pokemon GO and support the petition #WeNeedHarryPotterGO. Also, if we do get a new project from Niantic, expect its Founder, John Hanke to deliver the news. Okay?
