Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is getting a tie-in comic book series from Marvel, which could be interesting. There have already been two games from Telltale based on comic book properties, but none of them have tie-in comics. It’s an unexpected move from Marvel and Telltale, but it could lead to interesting results if it goes well.
The new tie-in comic book was spotted in the recently released Marvel July 2017 solicitations, courtesy of Newsarama. Considering the reputation Telltale has gained over the years, one has to wonder why the comic book wasn’t announced beforehand. Still, it could be a fun story for comic book readers and gamers, so here’s why it’s worth getting.
Fred Van Lente
Comic book writer Fred Van Lente will be writing the tie-in comic to Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series. He is no stranger to the Marvel universe, writing a number of tales for Spider-Man and Hercules, among other heroes. Van Lente also wrote the anti-hero mini-series Deadpool vs Punisher, with the first of five issues released last week.
Though he isn’t as known as Brian Michael Bendis or Geoff Johns, he’s a solid writer in his own right. Fans loved his run with the Incredible Hercules comic, which he co-wrote with another underrated comic book writer Greg Pak. Marvel made a great decision getting Fred Van Lente as the writer for the tie-in and it will be exciting seeing him write the Guardians.
Telltale Is Helping
According to the solicitation, the tie-in comic to Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series will be a collaboration between Marvel and Telltale. It seems like this was made clear, so that no one would think this was a small filler story. Comic book tie-ins to video games haven’t always been great, so it’s good that the company is helping out with the story.
Telltale games have always had solid stories, so seeing them work on a tie-in comic book should be really interesting. Gamers new to the series might want to pick the comic up and see how the events of the mini-series lead to the game. Overall, it should be a fun story and could enrich the lore of the episodic game series.
During an interview with Marvel, Fred Van Lente revealed that the prequel comic would have Planet Sakaar and Thanos in it. Sakaar is mostly known for the epic Planet Hulk storyline, and it will also be appearing in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok movie. Getting to see this setting in the new comic book should be a fun way to check the planet out.
Thanos will be appearing in the game, so it will be interesting to see if he shows up in the comic book tie-in. His popularity has grown immensely and him appearing in the comic would be a big deal for Telltale fans. At the least, a number of intense fight scenes in Planet Sakaar would be a fun way to make the comic bigger than it currently is.
The first episode of Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. Episodes two through five should be released throughout the year, with a physical “season pass” disc coming soon. Telltale has also worked on games featuring Batman and characters from The Walking Dead, none of which received a comic book tie-in.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 comes out in the States on May 5. There will also be a Free Comic Book Day issue featuring the Guardians. The tie-in comic book will be a five issue mini-series, with the first issue coming out in July.
