Using augmented reality tech to transform boxes of fries into a pixelated game, the Gol! App from McDonald’s turns you into a World Cup player.

The next time you munch on some McDonald’s fries, you could, ?in an instant?, end up playing futbol (or soccer, depending on where you are) at the World Cup in Brazil. The new boxes of fries that McDonald’s is using to celebrate the upcoming World Cup tournament in Brazil, can be used to play the ?beautiful game? with the help of the Gol! App.

The app, which can be downloaded at ? ? or from the Google Play or App Store, turns the specially designed fry boxes into a mobile game.

The design of the FIFA World Cup McDonald’s Fries boxes, are created by selected designers from around the globe, and will temporarily replace the usual red boxes starting May 26. Not only will the new artwork celebrate the coming games, but it will also share the thrill of the tournament to all fans of the game around the world, by offering the chance to play the Gol! Game.

In a press statement, McDonald’s Senior Executive Vice President and Global Chief Brand Officer Steve Easterbrook, said that ? This is the first time in brand history we’re changing the packaging design of one of our customers’ most favorite menu items on a global scale, and what better reason than to share in the excitement of one of the most prestigious sporting events in the worldThis is about bringing fun, innovative programming to our customers and celebrating our shared love of futbol. We’re excited to be able to do that through an engaging, interactive mobile experience.?

Once the Gol! App is activated, the smartphone user only needs a FIFA World Cup McDonald’s Fries box to start playing the game. With augmented reality tech, the handset needs to be placed over the box and the game is on.

?Players? can do trick shots by bouncing the virtual soccer ball off real objects to earn points, win badges and unlock bonus treats. They can also choose to represent their country, just like in a World Cup tournament, and battle for national pride and glory (The points that the player earns are collected in a world trick shot leaderboard).

For those who cannot find a World Cup Fries box in their community, a trial version of the Gol! Trick shot app can be downloaded from May 26 onwards.

The Brazil 2014 World Cup will kick off on June 12, 2014, and McDonald’s has also lined up new television commercials to highlight the game, as well as the Gol! App. The ads feature people of all ages doing awesome trick shots using a soccer ball, a lot of imagination, and a ton of practice.
