Producing loud sounds accompanied by pyrotechnic devices commonly known as fireworks has been a tradition of many in welcoming a new year. The practice originated from the ancient Chinese belief that making noise is a good way of scaring away bad spirits and attracting good luck.

Countries around the globe have their own way of observing this tradition. In New Year?s Eve of December 31, 2013, iconic landmarks showcased their fireworks display to welcome 2014 with a bang.

Included in the list are New York?s Times Square, Brazil?s Copacabana Beach, United Kingdom?s London Eye Observation Wheel, France?s Eiffel tower, Australia?s Opera House, and Dubai?s Burj Khalifa.

Times Square in New York exhibited displays of light while the clock counted down to zero. New Year?s Eve kisses were shared by couples to invite the blessing of spending the whole year together. The traditional ball drop signified the beginning of a new year.
