Not long ago, Gionee easily grabbed the crown for the world?s thinnest smartphone with their Gionee Elife S5.1 model. But other device makers, most of them from China, have quickly caught up and released their own anorexic phones. The Oppo R5 and its 4.85mm-thin body snatched the title from Gionee several weeks later. Vivo didn?t want Oppo to rest on their laurels for too long so the company unveiled the Vivo X5 Max with a slightly slimmer 4.8mm profile.

Another Chinese smartphone maker isn?t willing to be outdone; Coolpad currently holds the esteemed title with the recent launch of their 4.7mm-slim Ivvi K1 Mini model. However, Coolpad may have to prepare to vacate the throne as Gionee may already be plotting to reclaim it. Rumors are rife that the company?s next smartphone, Gionee Elife S7, is set to beat them all in the girth department.

The leak

A number of leaked photos out of China appears to show a phone believed to be the Gionee Elife S7. The handset looks amazingly slim and is reported to have an unbelievable 4.6mm-thin body. If this proves to be true, then it will be an odd deviation from the company?s naming scheme. The Elife S5.1 boasts of a 5.1mm profile and the Elife 5.5 is, you got it, 5.5mm-thin. So logic would dictate that this soon to be released handset will have 7mm-slim form factor, or perhaps a 7-inch display. However, if you inspect the leaked images, you may notice that both assumptions seem to be incorrect. You can see the rumored Gionee Elife S7 right here.

The announcement

When it comes to the device?s other specs, not much is known. But Gionee?s global marketing head, Oliver Sha, has this to say:

?The race to make the slimmest smartphone was getting out of hand. Going so slim is actually not benefiting user experience without the performance to back it up,? said by Oliver Sha, head of global marketing of Gionee.?

If we take that at face value, the device maker may probably release a device that isn?t the slim handset we?re talking about. The company looks like they now prefer a model that actually has the necessary circumference to house better antennas, camera, battery, and other impressive hardware.

Gionee is now sending out invites for the official launch of the Gionee Elife S7 handset. The event will take place at Barcelona, Spain, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 on March 2.
