The full-length Ghost In The Shell trailer is out and the execs can finally heave a sigh of relief – for now. The version of the trailer was subtitled in Japanese at an event party in Tokyo on Sunday. So far it has been viewed quarter of a million times on YouTube. The ratio between likes and dislikes are 10:1.
There has been some controversy surrounding the film as some people didn’t like the idea of casting a white actress for the main role. But Scarlett Johansson was exactly the boost the film needed in order to get global appeal.
It turns out Japanese fans didn’t really care who nagged the lead role for they knew a white actress would likely star in the Hollywood film. The negative responses were targeted on Takeshi Kitano. It looked like he’d been stereotyped as a yakuza gangster for the countless times he’d played them. It’s almost impossible to think of him as anything else.
A Change of Heart
Afro na Samurai wrote, “Wow! I wasn’t expecting anything from this live-action version, but I’ll watch this, I really want to see it. Paramount and DreamWorks, this is more than enough to convince me! And Scarlett has just the right feel for it! I take back what I said about this turning out to be a piece of crap.”
For a lot of viewers the visuals were strikingly attractive and production values were obviously higher compared to a Japanese film on lower budgets. Takahiro Watanabe wrote, “This looks 100 times better than a Japanese live-action movie would have been…though I’m not saying it’s a good idea to have done a live-action version. Another one said it really made a difference if you had money. It took the film to a whole new level.
Naturally it was compared to Dragon Ball. One said we won’t know the outcome until you see the whole thing. But it looks like we can have higher hopes for this compared to Dragonball Evolution back in 2009. Unfortunately, it was a flop Hollywood manga adaptation.
