There are already talks about adding new cast members for the live-action movie ?Ghost in the Shell.? The hit mange series is now sorting out its casts before officially starting production early next year. Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks will work together in operating the upcoming movie, with both financing the production and Paramount Pictures leading the international distribution.

?Ghost in the Shell? cast and characters

Scarlet Johansson is already set to play the role of lead character Motoko Kusanagi. But her casting in the movie has been met with a lot of negative reviews and controversy, accusing of the lead cast being similar to ?white washing,? according to Forbes.

And additionally, Johansson was reportedly offered $10 million to play the lead role, with the said amount more than the budget if the original 1995 movie directed by Mamoru Oshii. ?I just don?t think she is a good fit for the role, as someone like Rinko Kikuchi would be more suited for a character like Motoko Kusanagi,? Ollie Barder from Forbes said.

On the other hand, Deadline reported Sam Riley, known for the movie ?On the Road? and ?Maleficent,? is in talks to be the villain in ?Ghost in the Shell,? opposite of Scarlet Johansson. Riley will play the role The Laughing Man, the main villain in the live-action movie and the leader bent on destroying the cyber tech company called Hanka Robotics. There is no official deal to claim that Sam Riley has already signed for the movie but ?there is a desire from both sides for one to get made,? according to Deadline.

Rupert Sander will direct the live-action movie, together with Jonathan Herman writing the script and Avi Arad and Steven Paul producing the movie. Michael Costigan, Jeffrey Silver, Tetsu Fujimura and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa are also executively producing.

Check out the plot from Dealdine:

?The story follows a female special ops cyborg Motoko Kusanagi (Scarlet Johansson) who leads a fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization called Public Security Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. The unit is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man (Sam Riley) who will stop at nothing to destroy Hanka?s advancements in cyber technology.?

The film is set to release in March 31, 2017.
