George R.R. Martin Hinted that Ned Stark Is Not Jon Snow?s Father Back in 2004

George R.R. Martin, the famous man behind A Song of Ice and Fire novels, hinted that Ned Stark is not really the father of Jon Snow way back in 2004.

Right from the beginning of the HBO hit series Game of Thrones, it was pretty much established that Jon Snow was Ned Stark?s bastard with a mysterious woman, whom Lady Catelyn Stark once referred to as ?a tavern slut.?

It took six seasons and a slew of shocking deaths and heartbreaks before the big reveal at the Tower of Joy came and finally laid to rest speculations about Jon Snow?s parentage. In the Season 6 finale ?The Winds of Winter,? fans got to finally discover, through Bran Stark?s vision, that Jon Snow is Ned Stark?s nephew. The curly-haired Lord Commander is the son of Ned?s sister Lyanna Stark, and quite possibly, Rhaegar Targaryen, the brother of Daenerys Targaryen.

But one Redditor, who goes by the name DeadHopesAndDreams, claims that George RR Martin himself had already dropped a hint about Jon Snow?s origins in a fan forum 14 years ago.

In a Feb. 28, 2002 Q&A with George R.R. Martin, one fan posed a seemingly harmless question for the best-selling author:

?Since all of their mothers died, who gave Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Tyrion Lannister their names??

George R.R. Martin responded with a wily answer:

?Mothers can name a child before birth, or during, or after, even while they are dying. Dany was most like named by her mother, Tyrion by his father, Jon by Ned.?

Redditor BeARBarian then interpreted George?s answer:

?If anyone doesn’t get it, “Dany was most likely named by her mother, Tyrion by his Father, Jon by Ned.” Rather than saying Tyrion and Jon by their fathers, Ned was named as if he wasn’t the father. Slightly subtle.?

George said that Jon Snow was named by Ned. He didn?t say Ned was the father.

If you?re still looking for hard evidence that Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryan really are Jon Snow?s parents, look no further. HBO has created an infographic that explains the relationships of the major characters in the series.

In the?image, there?s a thick line that connects Lyanna, Rhaeger, and Jon Snow. Clearly, the image says that all three characters are blood-related. That means Jon is a Targaryen. The only mystery now is Jon?s real first name.

Could it be Jaehaerys as some claim it to be? We have to wait a year to find out.
