The development of Gears of War 4 is finally complete as Microsoft officially announced that the upcoming installment of the third-person shooter has gone gold. At the preview event last week, game developer, The Coalition, confirmed that Gears of War 4 will support a split-screen co-op on PC for the game’s campaign.
Technical director Mike Rayner told PC Gamer that from a development perspective, this feature was “quite difficult to support.” However, he said the feature was added after hearing people?s feedback about wanting it in the Gears of War Ultimate Edition. He added that the feature did require some extra effort on the part of the development team.
?We have to deal with multiple inputs, we have to deal with focus, we have to deal with UI placement,? Rayner said about the split-screen co-op. ?That extra work–especially when having to also consider all the resolutions and aspect ratios a PC can have–may be why most big games nowadays don’t typically support split-screen co-op.?
Earlier this year, Coalition boss Rod Fergusson confirmed that the Gears of War 4 will also offer split-screen co-op on Xbox One, though the framerate drops to 30fps. This applies to ?both campaign and multiplayer mode, but it remains to be seen if Gears of War 4 on PC will offer split-screen for multiplayer as well.
PC Split Screen in Multiplayer?
However, an Xbox Wire article seems to confirm the split-screen across all the co-op modes which could mean a split-screen for the multiplayer as well.
?Not only is it the most technically ambitious Gears game yet ? with split-screen play on both Xbox and Windows 10, Xbox Play Anywhere support, Cross Play across all co-op modes, and available 4K graphics ? it?s a return to the grounded, tense and brutal tone that made so many fall in love with this universe, story and characters for the first time.?
Additionally, with Microsoft?s Xbox Play Anywhere, the game can even be played cross-play online between Windows 10 and Xbox One. This includes the campaign co-op, Horde mode, multiplayer versus AI, and multiplayer versus mode in private and LAN games.
Microsoft also released a final preview of the game in the Gears of War 4 Launch Trailer to feature exclusively in-game footage. Gears of War 4 will be released October 11 on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC as part of Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program.
