In the Game of Thrones Season 6 finale, the secret of ?Ice and Fire? was finally revealed in Bran?s flashback when he followed his father?s younger self at the Tower of Joy. Fans of both the show and the books rejoice together as the series? biggest theory has been finally confirmed!!
[Spoilers throughout Season 6 Ahead!!]
The biggest fan theory even before the show began was the R + L = J theory, which stands for Rhaegar Targaryen + Lyanna Stark = Jon Snow. Good thing the show did not make us wait until the next season to reveal this secret or else we?ll just have to burn them all! …Just kidding. But seriously, THANK YOU David Benioff and Dan Weiss!!
In Bran?s flashback sequence, he takes us back to the Tower of Joy when a young Ned Stark, together with Ser Howland Reed defeated the Targaryen knights. Bran then followed Ned go up the tower where his sister Lyanna lay in bed, all covered in blood, and dying from childbirth. When the baby was brought in, Lyanna whispered to her brother to ?promise? her something. We can already assume that this is the promise of adopting the baby and keeping his identity a secret. She then gave the baby to Ned and said something about not letting Robert know. Bran looked in awe as he witnessed another big secret reveal itself before him.
The shot zooms in to the baby then cuts to Jon Snow?s face which shows that Lyanna and Rhaegar?s baby and Jon Snow are indeed one and the same. Huge, huge victory for the great houses suppressed of their power since the beginning of the series. So, Jon is actually a Stark and a Targaryen, as many fans have been speculating for yeaaars?a union between Ice and Fire, a very powerful combination.
So how did this all happen? Why did Lyanna make Ned promise to keep it a secret?
According to Independent, when the Mad King Aerys, sat on the Iron Throne, his son Rhaegar was married to Elia Martell, but he wasn?t a totally faithful man and ran off with Lyanna Stark. At that time, Lyanna was to be wed to Robert Baratheon, who was so deeply in love with her. But when he knew that she ran off with Rhaegar, that?s when he started his rebellion against the throne. He overthrew the Mad King from the Iron Throne, hence, naming him the usurper. And eventually, Ned found out where his sister was, and there, he met the true heir to the Iron Throne.
And of course, knowing Robert?s wrath, he promised his sister to keep it all a secret.
And even though Jon grew up a bastard, he was still hailed the ?King in the North? by the loyal Northern houses as seen in the finale. What will then happen IF he finds out that he is actually both a Stark AND a Targaryen? Will he ever find out? Is this the reason why the ?Lord of Light? or whoever that was, god or not, allowed him to return from the dead? Was he really the ?prince that was promised?? Was he right to exile the Red Woman?
What an exciting set up for Season 7!
