Days after the disappointing news that Game of Thrones might not return until July, a new one has emerged. But unlike the previous update, this one will definitely stir everyone’s excitement about the upcoming season. Over the weekend, HBO dropped a new ‘In Production Now’ promo and it potentially hints at a key character’s reborn.
The video which was uploaded on Twitter was aired on the network on Saturday during one of its promotional segments. In the 15-second clip, a mysterious hand is holding the Oathkeeper, the sword Jaime Lannister gave to Brienne of Tarth when she went on her mission to rescue Sansa Stark.
We can recall that it is one one of two Valyrian steel swords forged from Ned Stark’s Ice. It is also one of the remaining Valyrian steel blades left in Westeros. But what does the Oathkeeper’s presence in the teaser means? While the sword simply suggests that Brienne might play a larger role next season, there could be something more to the presence of Oathkeeper on the video.

Game of Thrones fans on Reddit have long suspected that the Oathkeeper may be the Lightbringer. Note that the latter sword belongs to Azor Ahai, the Westerosi warrior from the books who defeated the darkness of the Great Other. According to Bustle, the prophecy claims that the legend will be reborn and will draw the sword from the flames to save the realm from eternal darkness and the White Walkers.
Azor Ahai Reborn
The two likely candidates for fulfilling the prophecy? Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. Apparently, Azor Ahai reborn can be a woman too.
However, in the production clip, it seems like the recipient of the sword isn’t one of the major characters. The same site notes it’s not Daenerys’, Jon’s, or Brienne’s. While it “remotely resembles” Ser Davos’ hands, the ones featured in the teaser has all of its finger joints intact, so that counts him out too.
Unfortunately, we cannot know for sure who the recipient really is and what the sword means until the show itself confirms it. Regardless, there sure will be a lot of opportunities for whichever character gets his hands on the Oathkeeper.
The previous season hinted that Jon and Daenerys will finally meet when Game of Thrones returns, while Brienne will join team Jon for the foreseeable future. If we’re lucky, we might know who among them could cause the blade to flame — finally settling the debate about Azor Ahai reborn’s new identity, once and for all.
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres this summer. HBO has not yet provided the exact date but it’s expected to return this July.
