The countdown for Frozen 2 has officially begun. Not only has Disney announced an official release date for the sequel, it also debuted Frozen 2 appetizer in the form of a trailer for the short film Olaf’s Frozen Adventure which will premiere this Christmas. Unfortunately, we won’t be getting the much-hyped second installment anytime soon. It’s underway at Disney, but we’re still in the shadows about its plot. Good thing the Internet has come up with a few theories that could be featured in the upcoming Frozen 2 movie. Let’s take a look at each of them below.
1. Ice Queen Elsa vs Fire-wielding Anna
If the first movie centered on Queen Elsa’s powers, the second could be Anna’s turn to have one too. One of the most popular theories online, many it suggests Anna will discover her hidden fire powers, ultimately becoming the surprise antagonist in Frozen 2. While the Arendelle sisters already fought in the 2013 blockbuster hit, it’s not thoroughly inconceivable that they’ll turn on each other again. After all, they have once misunderstood each other’s motives.
According to this theory, Anna may be brainwashed by another character, convincing her that she deserves more to rule the kingdom.
2. Lesbian Elsa
Last year, a number of LGBT rights advocates started petitioning the House of Mouse to make the Ice Queen a lesbian in Frozen 2, going as far as launching a trending hashtag, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, on Twitter in May. Idina Menzel, the Tony-winning Broadway singer-actress, 45 who voiced the character, told PrideSource that she was “really happy” that her character sparked the conversation.
“I can’t promise anybody that that’s what’s gonna happen,” she said. “But deep down am I really happy that it’s causing people to talk about it and have these kinds of conversations? Yeah, I am.”
3. Olaf as Elsa’s New-Found Love
In this theory, Olaf is under a curse, which turned him into a bubbly snowman, and Elsa is going to help him return to his original form: a human. To make it more interesting, the Queen will fall in love with the human Olaf. The bubbly snowman previously stayed by Anna’s side at the fireplace and told her, “Some things are worth melting for.” This makes him a good choice for Menzel’s character, who was once described as “a queen with a cold heart,”
Another version theorizes Olaf will likely get a love interest, but it’s going to be a female snowman. Elsa, on the other hand, would be paired with Jack Frost. However, the latter is unlikely.
4. Arendelle Sisters vs Evil King
Youth Health Mag states Frozen 2 could draw inspiration from another famous book by L. Frank Baum, called Ozma of Oz. The novel shares a lot of similarities with the Disney hit. For example, Anna of Arendelle and Dorothy of Kansas have a lot of characteristics in common. Both books also have “a theme of having the power within and just figuring out what to do with it for the best interest of everyone involved.”
5. Origin of Elsa’s Powers
The most plausible among the items, this theory states we might finally learn where Elsa’s powers came from in the second movie. There was really no clear explanation how she got them, save for being born with it. Some fans think the situation could be the same as Tangled: Rapunzel obtained her powers because her mother consumed a magical flower before her birth. Perhaps Elsa’s parents did too?
Others think it could’ve run in the royal family because while her parents were troubled by the magic, they weren’t horrified by it, and they actually knew who to consult when the powers get out of hand (the trolls). This suggests powers are unheard of in their world and may even run in Elsa’s family, skipping a couple of generations.
The Frozen 2 plot could be one of these items or a combination of two. Regardless, we can expect that it’ll be as wonderful as the original film.
Frozen took over the world when it premiered. It became the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time and by far the highest-grossing animation. Not to mention, it bagged two Academy Awards, a Bafta, a Golden Globe, a soundtrack that’s earned over a million album sales and seven million Spotify streams, official YouTube video views in the hundreds of millions, and a DVD that became Amazon’s best-selling children’s film of all time based on advance orders alone.
The Frozen 2 movie premieres on November 27, 2019. The all-new featurette, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, will open in theaters in front of Disney/Pixar’s Coco beginning November 22 this year.
