Frank Ocean is back into the music spotlight with a new song almost every couple of weeks, sparking rumors that a new album is in the works. Following Chanel which was released earlier this month, the 29-year-old singer dropped another single titled Lens, on the fourth episode of his Beats 1 show Blonded Radio Saturday night.
In addition to a solo version of the track, Ocean also premiered an alternate rendition featuring fellow artist, Travis Scott. So, is Ocean really working on a new album? Here’s everything we know so far.
Frank Ocean New Album: His Long Hiatus
Ocean started releasing new music again less than a year after his triumphant comeback in the form of his Blonde album. We can recall he went into a recluse mode for four years after releasing Channel Orange in 2012. Following Blonde’s debut, fans assumed that the latest collection would be the only peep the singer would be making in the next few years. Much to their surprise, the Novacane hitmaker began dropping singles again this year.
First, we got Slide, a collaboration with Calvin Harris and Migos in which Ocean took a less artsy, more commercial approach. The song has since earned the 7th spot on the Billboard US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. Ocean surprised his fans yet again with the release of an original song, Chanel, during the second episode of Blonded Radio. This was when rumors of a new Frank Ocean album started surfacing.
Is A Frank Ocean New Album In The Works?
According to some reports, he has been working to release a new album sooner than later and Chanel was the promotional single for the upcoming project just like how Thinkin’ Bout You did for Channel Orange. There has been no confirmation of the claims so far, but it gained further proof when Ocean released Biking earlier this month.
Like most of his past releases, Biking earned praises from critics. The New Yorker even called his latest singles “among his best songs ever.” With the release of Lens recently, many are curious if he is readying the world for a new album. The clues are apparently pointing in that direction, especially as each new episode of Blonded Radio introduces stellar tracks.
Or Are They All Musical Leftovers From Blonde?
However, it’s entirely possible as well that he’s just debuting leftovers to get his fans to listen to Blonded Radio. After all, the songs he dropped via the program feature a moody, acoustic sheen similar to what was found on his last album. Then again, we don’t know for sure. Unfortunately, the singer remains tight-lipped about the rumors. It’s also still too soon to tell exactly what he has planned so we’ll have to wait and see, as usual.
