Facebook has announced Wednesday its acquisition of the popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp, for $16 billion. The social media giant also did the same on Instagram and on other independent services. With these acquisitions coming in, users cannot help but feel concerned about WhatsApp?s future. They fear that Facebook could potentially ruin the app, which Facebook clarified that it will remain independent. If you are one of these concern users, here are four free alternative apps similar to WhatsApp.

Option 1: Kik

Kik began as a BlackBerry app and now offers free messaging services to more than 100 million active users. Unlike WhatsApp and other similar apps, Kik users are not required to have a mobile phone number. The Canadian company recently included a built ? in browser on its recent update for Android and iOS. With this feature, users can now browse the web without having to leave the app. Kik messaging app is available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry.

Option 2: Viber?

Viber is a free text and voice messaging app with more than 200 million users on both mobile and desktop. This recently acquired app (for less than $900 billion) also offers call services to non ? Viber users for only 1.9 cents per minute using Viber Out. It has a desktop version for users where they can sync the messaging from any connected mobile device to the computer. Viber is available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8 and Blackberry.

Option 3: WeChat

China ? based WeChat, which initially began merely as a messaging service provider, has broadened its scope by changing it into a kind of social network. Formerly known as Weixin, WeChat offers a wide range of options to connect with other users. You can send messages, share photos, engage in a group chatting, do voice or video calls, find friends and share locations. WeChat is now available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry.

Option 4: Tango

Tango is also a messaging app that is now on its way to becoming a full ? fledged social network. Apart from its standard text messaging services, Tango now offers video calls, voice calls, photo sharing, friend discovery, in ? app games, and Spotify ? powered music sharing. You can download this app for free on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7. You can also have this app on your desktop.
