The MMA, boxing and the entire combat sports community were surprised to finally hear that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor have signed the contracts for their bout this August. While everyone is eagerly waiting for the event, it looks like it might get cancelled because of a conflict schedule against a basketball promotion.
Mayweather and McGregor’s bout is set to be held on Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena. Unbeknownst to many, rapper Ice Cube has already booked the T-Mobile Arena at the same date, reports News AU. The rapper isn’t also willing to move BIG 3 basketball league to give way for the bout.
The camp of both fighters are confident that Ice Cube and their party will come to an agreement of some sort. The fighters’ camps are sure that the event will push through the desired place at the desired time. For now, Ice Cube is intent on pushing his event through and will begin with the promotions soon.
Mayweather vs. McGregor is definitely a cash grab event for both parties. While there are a lot of people worried about the event being cancelled, there are also a lot who doesn’t seem to care whether or not the biggest event in boxing unfolds.
Many are saying that the bout is pretty lopsided and that’s very true to be honest. In one corner, you got a fighter who has been training in various martial arts to make it big in MMA. In the other corner, you got one of the best boxers ever. An undefeated champion in many divisions, an Olympian and most important of all, a fighter who has trained in boxing his entire life.
Fans are calling it with Mayweather winning either by points or KO. Some don’t even feel the need to watch the event with an apparently very predictable outcome.
Another reason why the fight feels unnecessary is Connor’s Welterweight belt at the UFC. After single-handedly grabbing it from Eddie Alvarez last November, McGregor is yet to defend the belt. A fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson for the Interim Welterweight belt was scheduled last February, but the former pulled out of the event a day before.
Fight fans probably want to see McGregor defend his belt more above anything else. The status of the Welterweight belt remains at a standstill as ‘Mystic Mac’ has other priorities outside of the UFC.
