Speculations of Fallout’s next installment, Fallout 5, has circulated in the rumor mill since last year. The fourth title in the main franchise has been Bethesda’s biggest success to date, so many are now wondering when its sequel will be released. The studio has been privy about what exactly they’re working on but it did confirm that they’re developing 2 major titles this year, neither of which is an Elder Scrolls game. Is it Fallout 5 then? Here’s what we know so far.
Whether it is really Fallout 5 that’s arriving next or a spinoff is not clear. Regardless, there have been rumors that the next installment has already entered production last year. Although the claims do not come from an official source, the notion that work has already begun on Fallout 5 stems from someone very close to the series. Ryan Alosio, who voiced Deacon in Fallout 4, claimed in an Instagram post he’s already working on the title, but later retracted his statement saying it was just an in-character prank.
Fallout 5 Development
Despite the false information, many were still hoping that the next installment is indeed already underway. Alosio’s claim was later followed by talks of Obsidian Entertainment being the developer of the upcoming game. The company’s former Game Designer and Writer Eric Fenstermaker mentioned they would love to work on another Fallout game back in January 2016.
However, in a Reddit AMA in November 2016 with Obsidian Entertainment employees including CEO Feargus Urquhart, the team confirmed there is no Fallout game or sequel in development at the studio. This sparked rumors of Zenimax Media’s BattleCry Studios might be the developer of the game.
Headed by former Star Wars: The Old Republic executive producer Rich Vogul, the company assisted idSoftware with getting Doom done right after the first attempt at Doom 4 went awry. Its next project was F2P RPG shooter Battlecry but it has been allegedly canceled. A Senior Embedded QA Analyst for Battlecry at BattleCry Studios accidentally mentioned it on LinkedIn but has since taken the posting down. The website and Twitter for the game have both disappeared as well.
It’s not yet official. But if Battlecry is at least delayed for the foreseeable future, that suggests the studio could work on another game and that could be Fallout 5. Zenimax has been recruiting people previously to work as a part of its subsidiary, Battlecry. The successful recruits will be involved in produce environment art for an undisclosed AAA title for PC and next-generation console platforms including asset creation, level build-out and lighting, and making in-game models and textures, to name a few responsibilities.
Fallout 5 Release Date
Unfortunately, everything is just a speculation right now because Bethesda is keeping all the details under wraps. But whether it’s Obsidian, Bethesda itself or someone else entirely, everyone’s wishing there’s a new Fallout title coming this year. Fallout 4 has been released at the end of 2015, so another installment isn’t totally a far-fetched idea.
If we’re lucky, we could see it launched at E3 this year. Bethesda has been a bigger and more important part of every event it has elected to participate in, and this year should be no exception. But as usual, we’ll have to wait and see.
