Facebook has been showing its users surprises since it announced its 10th year anniversary. Apart from the emotion ? triggering lookback video, the social networking giant released Paper. It is an app that lets readers explore and share amazing stories. This is a part of Facebook?s ambition to become a global news reading hub.
A Virtual Newspaper
California based Facebook Menlo Park unveiled on Thursday the Paper app, a news ? reading tool that gathers personalized news. This allows readers to read news from major publications and share them among friends. However, the Paper app is not available on desktop. This feature is exclusively for mobile use only.
The Paper app has surprised the likes of Twitter, Google?s News, Flipboard?s magazine ? type reader, LinkedIn?s Pulse and more. With this new Facebook app, readers will enjoy reading their preferred stories anywhere they go and without the annoying ads. This invites advertisers to promote in news, said analyst Rebecca Lieb of Altimeter Group
Facebook?s Multi App Strategy
The social networking giant is gaining an advantage from publishing companies with the improvement of Paper app?s personalization engine. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday during the company?s earnings call that it will continue to push into having a multi ? app strategy. Gartner analyst Vassil Mladjov said that Facebook is trying to change the way people read news.
What You Will Find on ?Paper?
A portion of the Paper app will contain Facebook?s newsfeed. The only difference is that this app will feature longer stories or posts from friends set in magazine ? like layouts where users can also include videos and photos. The app will allow people to scroll through posts both horizontally and vertically. They can even enable full ? screen slide shows. Paper app users can also tilt their smartphones to navigate through images.
The new Facebook app will let people customize what they wish to see with plenty of sections to choose from like food, sports and Science. People can also enjoy a mix of media from the different sections that come from major publications and Facebook?s membership base.
The Paper app is already available on Apple?s App store, but the Android version has not yet been released. The app is just the first to come out from Facebook?s Creative Labs unit, with more new apps to launch in the future.
