Facebook has just updated its iPad app to provide ?timely? information, according to the social media giant?s blog post yesterday. The new Facebook for iPad application now sports a new side panel that will display details about trending topics, the weather, videos, and most especially, games.
This new feature is currently being rolled out to Facebook for iPad users in the United States starting on Monday. If users want to experience the Facebook app?s new look, all they need to do is rotate their devices to landscape mode and the app will reveal the new right-hand side panel.
To be exact, the app?s side panel has four new sections. These are described by Facebook Software Engineer Victor Medeiros in a post published in their official developers? blog. ?Here?s his brief description:
- Trending topics: A feature launched on desktop in January, Trending is a list of topics people are talking about most on Facebook right now, personalized to include topics you?re interested in, as well as topics trending across Facebook overall.
- Trending videos: A feature new to iPad, trending videos includes a personalized selection of the most-shared videos among your demographic on Facebook right now.
- ?My games: A selection of games you already play, with an easy link to start playing them on your iPad.
- Popular games: iPad games you might want to play, based on games your friends have played and what?s popular on Facebook.
This updated Facebook for iPad app is seen as a move by the social network in line with a recent internal finding indicating more than 70% of iPad users in the past 90 days have played a Facebook game. Having said that, it only makes sense that the company updates its app on the relevant device to support more opportunities for game discovery.
For the meantime, this Facebook for iPad version will be enjoyed by U.S. users. But a global release is a very likely scenario, the only question is ?how soon?? Furthermore, no plans have been dropped by Facebook to implement the same update to their smartphone app.
