Eminem hasn’t released an album since 2013, but that could change this year. Allen Hughes, the director of the new Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine HBO documentary The Defiant Ones, suggests his ninth one is already underway and could very well arrive anytime soon.
In case you missed it, Hughes spilled the beans during an interview this past Friday. Discussing Dr. Dre’s transition from hip-hop savant to savvy businessman, he said the producer still records and he “literally” does it every day. “He’s like Picasso in that way. He’s always painting,” he continued. “Right now he’s producing, in the 11th hour, a track for Eminem’s latest album. So Dre’s still real active in music, you know?”
Over the weekend, 2 Chainz added more fuel to the fire when he said he has worked on new music with Eminem and that the Detroit rapper indeed has a “project coming out.” The Mercy rapper detailed during his interview with DJ Drama on Shade 45’s Streetz Iz Watchin’ that it came after a phone call made by D-12 member, Denaun Porter.
Initially, he wasn’t sold on the idea, considering they simply wanted him to redo a hook and throw on some ad-libs. So he suggested being a featured artist on the original track. “I tell him straight up… Eminem, what would you need a remix for? Remixes are used to carry records to No. 1 spots. When have you ever did a remix for someone or for yourself? That’s cap at it’s finest,” he said.
Eminem New Album 2017: Possible Collaborations
It’s not just 2 Chainz, though. If the rumors are anything to go by, Nicki Minaj could be recording with Shady as well. International Business Times notes the Anaconda hitmaker previously shared she’s open to doing a follow-up to their epic 2010 hit Roman’s Revenge. Although she had never thought about it before, she thinks it’s “dope idea”
“Of course I love Em…That would be nice, that would be beautiful,” Minaj said.
In recent months, Eminem, 44, has also been photographed hanging out with Kendrick Lamar and Drake, so these collaborations are also a possibility, per the publication.
As Shady remains mum, details on his album are sketchy at the moment. But many expect him to drop it before the end of the month or sometime in August, coinciding with his performance at Reading & Leeds Festival on August 26 and 27. Jay-Z did the same in May, headlining V Festival first before dropping 4:44 by surprise in June.
