Creator of the legendary game Doom John Carmack will become part of Facebook?s workforce soon. Carmack had high hopes that he can juggle two passions at the same time, one on video game development and another on virtual reality hardware. However, reality got in the way and forced him to choose Oculus VR over id Software. Facebook has recently announced its plans to purchase virtual reality headset maker Oculus for $2 billion. Carmack remains to be Oculus? CTO.

Torn Between Two Passions

Carmack left his former employer, id Software, in late 2013 to serve Oculus VR. He helped develop mega hit video games such as Quake and Doom. The video game developer started his interest in virtual reality headsets two years ago. This brought him to become Oculus? chief technology officer, which made him juggle his time between Oculus and id Software. Carmack eventually left id to finally devote his time to Oculus late November last year.

A Tough Decision to Make

Carmack remains mum on the details about his departure from the former employer. He had hoped that id Software parent company ZeniMax Media and Oculus VR would agree to allow the integration of his games into the VR headset. This deal did not work and Zenimax even attempted to limit his resources in making virtual reality games. Carmack told USA Today that the loss of opportunity to work on VR made him quit his connection with id Software.

Carmack Sees Opportunity in Virtual Reality

It would be wise to hear Carmack if he says that VR could be a big thing in the future. As a big name in the video game development industry, this guy knows what he is saying. It is understandable, however, why ZeniMax had reservations about the idea of virtual reality. The technology has never proven itself to be more than just a prototype over the years. It would take a long time before the product could attract the general consumer market.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg?s decision in buying Oculus VR will bring more light to the actualization of this long ? time tech dream. It is the social media giant?s vision to create the next computing platform. Well, Zuckerberg will have a better shot with John Carmack in his business plan.
