Doctor Strange Updates at SDCC2016: See Tilda Swinton in a Perfect Role as the Ancient One

By on

Marvel Studios had amazing reveals during the recent San Diego Comic Con 2016, showcasing its upcoming movies and series for the rest of the year and 2017. This included exciting previews of the Iron Fist and Luke Cage Netflix series, the Legion TV show, the third Thor movie-Thor: Ragnarok, and the strangely awesome full-length Doctor Strange trailer.

Doctor Strange is one of the legendary and long-running characters of the Marvel Universe, first appearing in issue number 110 of the Strange Tales anthology series, which also introduced the now famous Nick Fury. Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange was originally a neurosurgeon who, in a car accident, destroys his hands. He encounters the Ancient One in his quest to repair his body.

Based on the full-length Doctor Strange trailer, it does seem like Marvel Studios was able to stay true to the comic book. Casting Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character was just perfect as the role comes naturally for him. Marvel fans are expressing nothing but positive remarks for Cumberbatch and the movie trailer.

Another brilliantly casting decision for this movie is Tilda Swinton who plays the Ancient One. Swinton is known for her androgynous character in another comic-book adaptation- Constantine. With the Ancient One being depicted as a male character in the comics, Swinton will definitely provide an intriguing take on the ?Sorcerer Supreme?.?

Tilda Swinton as Ancient One

It was not revealed in the trailer if the Ancient One in the movie is directly portrayed as female, though Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige explains that Marvel saw that this figure as more of a mantle than a one specific person. ?The sorcerers have been around for millennia, protecting us from things we didn?t know about until this story. There have been multiple [Ancient Ones], even if this one has been around for five hundred years, there were others. This is a mantle, and therefore felt we had leeway to cast in interesting ways.?

Joining Swinton is Rachel McAdams, who still has an unclear role in the movie. Fans speculate that she would be like Tony Stark?s Pepper – to Doctor Strange.

The fantasy-action movie, Doctor Strange is set to hit theaters in the US on November 4, 2016
