Many fans are worried after finding out that Eidos Montreal is planning to hire a multiplayer specialist in their ranks. Fans are speculating that this could mean a potential Deus Ex multiplayer game. The Deus Ex series has a bad history with microtransactions as seen in the Mankind Divided title.
According to PlayStation Lifestyle, Eidos Montreal has put up a Network Programmer job opening for someone familiar with multiplayer games and AAA development. The listing doesn’t reveal details about any project but many fans think it’s going to be a Deus Ex multiplayer game.
Potentially, the Deus Ex Breach mode might be improved to support multiplayer features as it is a flexible single-player only online game. A PvP game mode could work in Breach, though it might get hampered by its pay-to-win nature.
As seen in Deus Ex Breach’s online features, microtransactions exist in this competitive single-player mode. However, many players feel that it’s a pay-to-win game, which defeats the competitive thrill for many. Deus Ex Mankind Divided’s Breach mode was unique but the audience definitely hated how it worked.
The Deus Ex Mankind Divided had a disastrous pre-order plan and an inconvenient microtransaction model. Square Enix ran an “Augment your Pre-Order” promotion where the pre-order bonuses would be upgraded depending on how many people pre-ordered. The pre-order scheme proved ineffective and was scrapped after fan backlash. Meanwhile, players could purchase Praxis kits with real money to upgrade their augments in the main single-player campaign, which Square Enix reportedly did at the last minute without consent from Eidos Montreal.
If Eidos Montreal does push through a Deus Ex multiplayer mode, this is a good chance to redeem themselves to their fans, granted it isn’t heavy on microtransactions. The next Deus Ex entry is now unlikely as the developer is focusing on Square Enix’s Avengers project. Stay updated with more Deus Ex news here on The BitBag.
