Designated Survivor wrapped its first season, tying several of its loose ends in a neat bow. We now know that Homeland Security adviser Jay Whitaker was the White House mole and that Patrick Lloyd was the architect of the Capitol bombing. But those were just the beginning for President Tom Kirkman. He’ll be dealing with a lot more—from new faces to more dangerous threats—when the show returns for Season 2.
Designated Season 2 Cast: New Faces and Returnees
Kiefer Sutherland, who plays Kirkman in the series, previously teased that Designated Survivor will be introducing new characters in its sophomore run. Speaking at ABC’s Upfronts presentation, he shared the show will see the addition of “no less than three principal characters to round out the complexities of running the White House.
There are currently no available details as to who the new faces are. But as far as the old cast is concerned, all surviving characters will likely return next season, including Natascha McElhone (First Lady), Adan Canto (Aaron Shore), Italia Ricci (Emily Rhodes), and, of course, Sutherland himself, among others. Rob Morrow also announced he’s been cast as a recurring character in the second season.
Series’ Big Bad
Terry Serpico is expected to reprise his role as Patrick Lloyd as well. And by the looks of it, his character could be the series’ antagonist moving forward. We can recall from the season finale that Kirkman revealed all to the nation that Al-Saqar wasn’t behind the attack, but domestic terrorist Patrick Lloyd. That said, we can expect the show to flesh the character out a bit more, while also explaining exactly what he intends to do in the future.
The last time we saw him, he was escaping from the good guys to who knows where. With him is all the classified information from Pentagon through Lozano. What and how they’re using it is something we’ll have to tune in for. However, speculations have it he might be handing it to the higher person he’s probably working for, perhaps even another government like Russia.
The Main Characters
The premise of Designated Survivor Season 2 is currently unclear. But Sutherland himself confirmed at the Upfronts presentation that it’ll delve more into the personal lives of the lead characters, adding that a mid-season event will “knock the socks off [their] audience.” Indeed, we know little to nothing about Seth, Emily, and Aaron on a personal level and we certainly could learn more.
For instance, do Aaron and Emily have plans of rekindling their almost-relationship? The two will once again be working together in the White House, so hopefully, we’ll see some romantic tension between them to add some lighthearted fun to Season 2. What do you think?
