Descendants of the Sun season 2 has been highly anticipated by Hallyu fans worldwide. However, scandals involving lead cast member Song Joong Ki have led to rumors that it will be cancelled.
The war-themed drama ended last April with record-breaking ratings and rave reviews from fans worldwide. Since then, the rumor mill has been abuzz over its alleged second installment.
$1.2 million USD lawsuit
The KBS drama?s success led to fan events starring its male protagonist, Song Joong Ki. The tour, named ?2016 Song Joong Ki Asia Tour Fan Meeting,? gathered thousands of supporters. It inevitably fueled hopes that Descendants of the Sun will surely have a sequel.
However, the team behind the event series is currently facing a major issue. This is due to a lawsuit from the handlers of the Hong Kong leg.
The contractors claimed that they handled production and promotions for eight events from May to July 2016. Their professional fees allegedly remain unpaid, which is why they are suing the main organizers. The lawsuit reportedly costs 9.6 million HKD or around $1.2 million USD.
Reports have clarified that the case is aimed at the organizers. Still, the fact that Song Joong Ki?s name is at the event title has resulted to negative publicity for the actor.
Aside from the legal woes of the event that he headlined, the actor is also being slammed with gay rumors.
His sexual preferences were questioned in a recent SportsRageous story. The publication detailed how the 31-year-old prefers the company of male co-workers.
An incident involving fellow actor Kwang Soo was also pointed out in the report. This was due to how Joong Ki admitted that he engraved the entertainer?s name in a stone while they were at a beach.
Doubts about his sexuality has resulted to confusion about his relationship with Song Hye Kyo. There have been rumors that the two Descendants of the Sun cast members are dating. With the gay allegations, some claim that Joong Ki is possibly just using the actress to cover up his identity.
?Descendants of the Sun? cancelled
All these rumors have resulted to speculations that Descendants of the Sun season 2 might not push through. Based on initial reports, the sequel is being targeted by KBS for 2017.
However, there has not even been any official announcement from the network that the project is confirmed. As such, it is best to still take reports with a grain of salt and wait for actual updates from showrunners.
