Fans of Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo a.k.a the SongSong couple have finally crossed an item off their wish list with the pair’s wedding announcement last week. But there’s one more thing left that everyone is waiting to happen and that’s their return on the long-rumored Descendants of the Sun Season 2.
The original drama which stars the onscreen-turned-real couple has become more than a domestic syndrome when it premiered last year; it established a new wave of Hallyu. No wonder fans have since demanded a second season of the Korean drama. Thankfully, KBS, the network behind the show, vowed to repay fans with another season.
KBS’s drama department, Jung Sung Ho, said last year talks were already ongoing and if everything goes well, it could air within this year. “KBS will strive to produce a second Descendants of the Sun to meet expectations and repay viewers,” he told Soompi. “We plan to launch a 2017 Descendants of the Sun project for broadcast in 2017 through negotiations with the cast and production team.”
However, he clarified that it does not require all the people who were involved in the first drama, noting that they are “advancing with projects that the production team and cast can consent to.” And as far as the original team is concerned, they do not seem interested in making another one.
Co-writer, Kim Won Suk, had long said, she has “no plans for a second season. I’ve already told the story I wanted to tell.” Joong Ki and Hye Kyo, while grateful for what the show has done for them, are unlikely reprising their roles of Captain Yoo Shi Jin and Kang Mo Yeon as well. The two has just revealed they have been dating for a while and are set to wed in October suggesting they will be busy with the preparations.
Descendants of the Sun 2 Cast
That said, there could be a cast revamp for Season 2. The makers are tight-lipped about the potential actors, but the public already has a few names in mind who could be in the new drama.
Lee Min Ho is the strongest contender so far after he topped the survey of most popular Korean actors conducted on American drama fans. His most recent drama Legends of the Blue Sea brought in 20 percent in viewership. However, he just started his mandatory military service in May, meaning he won’t be back in the spotlight for a while.
If Min Ho couldn’t make it, though, the new lead could be Nam Joo Hyuk. The actor is reportedly among the favorites to potentially appear in Descendants of the Sun 2. He previously played the role of the adorable swimmer and boyfriend of Bok Joo in Weightlifting Fairy and is now headlining Bride of the Water God.
There are reports of Park Bo Gum‘s casting as well. The former Moonlight Drawn by Clouds star is known to be very close to Joong Ki. He previously said he wanted to portray his senior’s role in The Werewolf Boy, leading fans to speculate that he might appear in the second season of DOTS.
Then again, these are just speculations. The creators have yet to make an official announcement so it’s best to take it with a grain of salt. We’ll be sure, though, to update you once new details are out. In the meantime, we’d like to hear who you want in the lead role of Descendants of the Sun 2.
