While Batman vs Superman proved to be a pretty rough start for DC Extended Universe, the franchise looks set to give Marvel a run for their money and that too with a female superhero in next?s year Wonder Woman.

During Warner Bros. Pictures panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, the studio debuted the first trailer for its upcoming movie. The action packed trailer that sees Gal Gadot?s reprising her role as Diana Prince, a.k.a. Wonder Woman is pretty wonderful and may hold the key to success of DC comic characters.

Till now Marvel has proved beyond doubt it ability to successfully bring several bigger and even smaller comic book characters to life with in-depth story lines. DC Universe has failed on this front despite having as many characters including several ones with hardcore fan following such as Batman, the Joker and many many more.

However with Wonder Woman things are due to change as Marvel so far hasn?t had an exceptional female character in their franchise. Of course, there is Scarlett Johansson?s Black Widow and Elizabeth Olsen?s Scarlet Witch, but their characters are more often overshadowed by the male superheros.

Diana on the other hand is the central character in the movie and plays the role of a female goddess that leads her male counterpart. In the trailer we catch shots of Wonder Woman carrying a sword in a ballgown, fighting on horseback, blocking bullets in the war trenches with her shield and wielding her golden lasso of truth. Interesting, the 31-year old actress, Gadot was a former combat trainer in the Israeli army.

Wonder Woman follows the storyline of Princess Diana of Themyscira as she joins the fight for global peace during World War I. Gadot will be joined by Chris Pine, who plays Steve Trevor, Diana’s lover during the conflict and Robin Wright as General Antiope of the Amazonian tribe and mother to Diana.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman is the third installment in Warner Bros. and DC’s new cinematic universe, following Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The movie is scheduled to be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D on June 2, 2017.

Disappointed with Batman v Superman? here how to catch the Extended Edition and know the full story. You can check out here the best of 2016 San Diego Comic-Con trailers.
