After more than a decade of waiting, fans will finally have their hands on the much-anticipated sequel of the trilogy “His Dark Materials.” The announcement came earlier this week coming directly from author Philip Pullman. He titled the book “The Book of Dust” and will come in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Back in 2003, Pullman first announced that he was already working on the third installment of his trilogy. However, fans of the book were left hanging as the sequel never hit the shelves for the past 14 years. On a good note, the author finally announced last Tuesday that the overdue sequel is finally arriving this year.
According to The Verge, “The Book of Dust” is going to have three parts. The first installment will roll out on October 19 while the other two have no specific release date yet. Hopefully, fans would not have to wait for another decade before the next sequel hits the stores. Also, as of writing, there is no information yet as to what titles the other two installments will have.
‘The Book of Dust’ Plot
In a recent interview with NPR, Pullman shared what events fans should expect in the “His Dark Materials” sequel. The author added that events will take place prior to the time of “The Golden Compass,” back when Lyra was still a baby. The next two, on the other hand, will have a plot that is a decade after the events of “The Amber of Spyglass.”
“It doesn’t stand for or after ‘His Dark Materials,’ but beside it. It’s a different story, but there are settings that readers of ‘His Dark Materials’ will recognize and characters they’ve met before,” Pullman shared. He mentioned as well that the trilogy will shed more light on the struggle between the Magisterium and “those who believe thought and speech should be free.”
Nature of Dust
Furthermore, the author revealed that in the trilogy, he will explore more the nature of Dust, which according to Magisterium is the source of the original sin. “That’s what I really wanted to explore in this new work. More about the nature of Dust, consciousness, and what it means to be a human being,” Pullman said.
These recent statements clearly indicate that the upcoming sequels of “His Dark Materials” are going to drop new information about the series. New characters might also be included in the installments, making the books more interesting. Let us wait for further announcement from the author regarding the next installment of the three-part sequel.
Meanwhile, another overdue sequel that fans have been waiting for is George RR Martin’s “Winds of Winter.” As of writing, the author has yet to reveal the official release date of the book and there are even speculations that he already cancelled it. But of course, there is no way to confirm that unless the announcement comes directly from Martin.
