Diaz and Conor McGregor met earlier this year at the UFC 196 and Diaz came out on top finishing McGregor via a rear-naked choke submission in round two. The end drew near for McGregor when he was hit flush and got wobbled by a Diaz 1-2. Both men were awarded Fight of the Night honors but the fight left more questions than answers.

Conor McGregor, who currently holds the UFC Featherweight belt, was supposed to fight for the UFC Lightweight Championship at that time against then champion Rafael Dos Anjos. This was his attempt to become the first-ever UFC dual-weight champion but the bout fell through because of an injury suffered by Dos Anjos at camp. Diaz came in as a late replacement and the bout was shifted to the welterweight division. Knowing the outcome, questions still remain whether which man will prevail when both fighters have a full camp that focuses on fighting a particular opponent.

Diaz came in but was not in the best fight shape. McGregor came in expecting a shorter southpaw. A rematch is both commercially viable and technically interesting. The rematch was originally scheduled for the UFC 200 but that fell through because of Conor McGregor having problems with his media obligations. Now, the fight is finally happening and it will be in the same weight class like before.

Should Diaz win, then that is all he wrote for McGregor?s dual-weight championship dream. Diaz seems to be a gatekeeper nowadays more than a title challenger. If Conor McGregor cannot move past him, it is unlikely that he can challenge better ranked lightweight fighters like Dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone and champion, Eddie Alvarez.

Should Conor McGregor win, it would set up a trilogy which could mean more money for the promotion and both fighters.

The UFC 202 also has an exciting light heavyweight bout between Anthony Johnson and Glover Texeira. Welterweights Carlos Condit and Demian Maia are also going to duke it out. Both matches could have some championship implications.
